NASCAR: Full qualifying order revealed for Las Vegas playoff race

As a seasoned gamer of NASCAR races with a decade-long passion for the sport, I eagerly await the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend. The playoffs are heating up and this race could potentially decide who earns their ticket to the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway.

This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs will transition to a conventional intermediate track located in Las Vegas, Nevada, following the completion of both a superspeedway race and a road course event that concluded the round of 12.

The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a venue that has held an annual playoff race since 2018, is all set to initiate the semifinal round. This event could potentially decide which one of the eight title contenders will be the first to secure their place in the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway three weeks down the line, where the ultimate winner will take it all.

Qualification for the South Point 400 race, spanning 267 laps on a four-cornered, 1.5-mile (2.414 km) track, will be conducted using a unique format where each driver participates individually. The groups and qualifying order will be established based on a four-factor system that NASCAR introduced in 2020.

In each group, only the top four teams remain in contention for the championship, since those who have been eliminated come first, followed by the round of 8 drivers in the calculation. The five quickest drivers within each group, whether they are playoff drivers or not, progress to the next round.

Contrary to the first visit of NASCAR to Las Vegas in March, where qualifying was based on individual speeds, the second round now operates on a group basis. This means that a quicker driver could potentially qualify after a slower one due to the grouping system.
