NASCAR: Full qualifying order revealed for Bristol playoff race
As a seasoned gamer with a passion for NASCAR and a knack for understanding complex formulas, I can’t help but feel a thrill when I see the full playoff qualifying order for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. With my fingers poised over the keyboard, ready to analyze each driver’s performance, I find myself in a state of excitement that rivals the adrenaline rush from conquering a high-stakes gaming level.
The initial phase of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs is set to conclude on a Saturday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway, marking the end of the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.
Following the turbulent races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen International, the high-banked Bristol, Tennessee oval, a four-turn, 0.533-mile track, is now poised to decide which eleven drivers will join Joey Logano of Team Penske in the quarterfinal round of twelve for the postseason.
RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher, a non-playoff driver, won at Watkins Glen, so no further round of 12 berths were clinched this past weekend.
Since Bristol is known as a short track, drivers will have the opportunity to take two timed qualifying laps rather than just one.
In simpler terms, during a qualifying session, each driver takes the track individually (single-car), and their position within their respective group is decided based on a scoring system consisting of four variables. This scoring system has been in use by NASCAR since 2020.
A full breakdown of that formula can be found here.
In this setup, drivers who haven’t qualified for the playoffs are placed ahead of those who have, in each group. The quickest five drivers from each group move on to a second-round contest for the pole position, regardless of whether they’re playoff contenders or not. A notable difference compared to NASCAR’s visit to Bristol in March is that the second round this time around follows a group format as well.
