NASCAR: Full Michigan starting lineup after qualifying rainout
As a seasoned gamer of NASCAR races, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns over the years – and this one has got to be one of the most intriguing! The cancellation of qualifying sessions due to rain is becoming as common as pit stops in these races. But the new formula for determining the starting lineup? Now that’s a game changer!
On Saturday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway, for only the second time during the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, a qualifying event was called off due to rain, postponing Sunday afternoon’s FireKeepers Casino 400 race.
Due to a rule implemented four years ago by NASCAR, when many qualifying events were eliminated due to restrictions in 2020, the initial lineup for the 200-lap race on the Brooklyn, Michigan oval, measuring 4 turns and 2.0 miles (3.219 kilometers), was decided using a method introduced by NASCAR.
The following equation, elaborated further below, consists of four factors:
On a regular weekly basis, this formula continues to be utilized. If qualifying hasn’t been called off, the results get flipped to decide the order of qualification.
Today’s race lineup kicks off with Denny Hamlin from Joe Gibbs Racing and Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing sharing the first spot on the grid for this afternoon’s event.

In the race held last year, initially begun on a Sunday but postponed because of rain and later resumed on Monday, was triumphantly claimed by Chris Buescher from RFK Racing. It’s worth noting that The Weather Channel forecasts an approximately 61% probability of afternoon thunderstorms this coming Sunday as well.
