NASCAR fans rip NFL for posting 'ignorant', 'disrespectful' video

As someone who has spent a good chunk of my life immersed in the world of NASCAR and its colorful characters, I find it hard to believe that the NFL, with all its resources and connections, would fail to recognize Kevin Harvick and his son Keelan during their brief appearance in one of their tweets. While I understand that not everyone may be a die-hard NASCAR fan, it’s still surprising when such a glaring oversight occurs, especially considering the fact that Fox, where Harvick now works, was broadcasting the Cowboys-Panthers game and the NFL even mentioned Fox in their tweet!

On Sunday, before the NFC game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, the NFL shared a video on Twitter that appeared warm and unassuming.

In the video, Sam Franklin Jr., the Panthers’ safety, was seen performing a unique greeting with a well-known young admirer who happens to be a fan of NASCAR.

12-year-old racing sensation Keelan Harvick, who happens to be the son of the previous NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick, was there. Meanwhile, Kevin watched proudly by his side.

Many supporters found it noteworthy that the Harvick family wasn’t acknowledged, suggesting that the NFL might have been unaware of who Franklin was truly engaging with.

Ironically, Keelan actually has more social media followers than Franklin.

Absolutely, most NASCAR drivers likely appreciate being able to maintain a level of anonymity in public settings, to some extent.

It’s not necessarily unusual for not every professional athlete to carry an arrogant demeanor when they enter a facility; thus, the NFL’s omission of the Harvick name in their tweet doesn’t equate to a criminal offense.

Additionally, numerous favorable remarks were made, a significant number coming from individuals who aren’t NASCAR fans and may not have recognized the Harvick name had it been mentioned to them.

Having said that, the criticism is somewhat justified.

Apart from being a well-known NASCAR racer, Kevin Harvick actually holds a position at Fox as well. During the broadcast of the Cowboys-Panthers game, this dual role was highlighted by Fox, with the NFL acknowledging it in their tweet.

It seems like it didn’t have any impact, suggesting it was merely an innocent mistake.

In preparation for the 2024 season, Kevin Harvick will be joining the NASCAR broadcast team on Fox, working alongside lead announcer Mike Joy and fellow ex-teammate Clint Bowyer who raced together at Richard Childress Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing. Following the completion of the 2023 Cup Series competition, Harvick decided to retire from full-time racing.

As a diehard NASCAR fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the 2025 season! This monumental year will kick off a fresh seven-year media deal that brings on board not just our current partners like Fox and NBC, but also newcomers Amazon Prime Video and TNT Sports. In this exciting expansion, I’m thrilled to learn that my favorite driver, Harvick, will continue his role as an insightful analyst during Fox’s coverage of the races. This means more of his wisdom and racing experience will be at our fingertips – something I can hardly wait for!

The racing schedule for Fox in the 2025 Cup Series commences with the Busch Light Clash preseason race at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 2nd (Sunday), and extends up to the All-Star Race, another exhibition event, at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 18th (Sunday).

From a gamer’s perspective: I’ve got a packed racing season ahead! Kicking things off is the thrilling 67th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 16. After that, it’s a 12-race marathon leading up to the final showdown at Kansas Speedway on May 11, in the AdventHealth 400. Buckle up, it’s going to be an exciting ride!
