NASCAR driver to miss the Daytona 500 after latest announcement

After much deliberation, the racing team owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt Miller, JR Motorsports, has chosen to move up to the NASCAR Cup Series. They have officially announced that Justin Allgaier, the current Xfinity Series champion, will pilot the No. 40 Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway next month.

The Chevrolet numbered 40 is an unofficial entry, which means it doesn’t have a guaranteed spot in the 200-lap race that takes place on the four-cornered, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked racetrack in Daytona Beach, Florida. The 36 officially recognized cars are already secured for the “Great American Race”, leaving room for four additional entries to compete.

It is possible that as many as 41 vehicles may participate in this year’s Daytona 500, due to the fact that Trackhouse Racing’s Helio Castroneves has been granted a provisional spot based on his status as a top-tier driver.

In simpler terms, if the driver doesn’t manage to secure one of the two fastest spots during the single-car qualifying session or isn’t among the two drivers who make it into the race through the Bluegreen Vacations Duel races, an additional spot (number 41) will be added. However, he has the chance to qualify on his own, in which case the maximum number of cars would stay at 40.

Either way, somebody is poised to miss the race, now that there are 43 cars on the entry list.

In addition to these open spots, you’ll find the No. 44 NY Racing Team Chevy driven by J.J. Yeley, the No. 56 Tricon Garage Toyota piloted by Martin Truex Jr., the No. 62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet for Anthony Alfredo, the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet driven by B.J. McLeod, and the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota with Jimmie Johnson behind the wheel.

Initially called MBM Motorsports and now known as Garage 66, the Ford car was initially slated for participation. However, NASCAR decided that Mike Wallace couldn’t drive it. Although they may find a replacement driver, the entry list promises to include at least 43 cars regardless.

It’s anticipated that the No. 15 Rick Ware Racing Ford will join as well. The No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet and the No. 50 Team AmeriVet Chevrolet are still potential additions.

Or, simply:

The No. 15 Rick Ware Racing Ford is expected to be included, while the Nos. 33 and 50 of Richard Childress Racing and Team AmeriVet could join as well.

All things considered, there could be more than 10 drivers going for four open spots.

As a dedicated gamer of virtual NASCAR races, I’m pumped to know that the single-car qualifying for the epic Daytona 500 happens on my calendar for Wednesday, the 12th of February. The thrilling Bluegreen Vacations Duel races are lined up for Thursday, the 13th (7:00 p.m. ET, airing on Fox), and finally, the main event, the Daytona 500 itself, is set for Sunday, the 16th of February (2:30 p.m. ET, again on Fox). Can’t wait to see the checkered flag wave!
