NASCAR: Dale Jr.’s team at risk of missing the 2025 Daytona 500?

At long last, JR Motorsports are preparing to transition to the NASCAR Cup Series. They’ve announced their intention to compete with the No. 40 Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway during the upcoming Daytona 500 in February. The reigning Xfinity Series champion, Justin Allgaier, will be behind the wheel for this exciting venture.

Nevertheless, the No. 40 car doesn’t have a guaranteed spot in this 200-lap race on the four-cornered, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Daytona Beach, Florida oval track. It’s an open entry and hasn’t been assigned any provisional position yet.

36 chartered vehicles are now part of the 40-vehicle grid, leaving four unclaimed spots. Two of these vacant positions will be filled by the quickest two drivers (from the pool of open cars) during the one-on-one qualifying rounds, and the remaining two will go to the highest-ranking drivers (among open cars) from the Bluegreen Vacations Duel races. If a driver secures a spot through more than one method, the next swiftest driver from the qualifying session will take the vacant position.

In a single situation, if Helio Castroneves from Trackhouse Racing secures one of the four available spots, the total number of racers will stay at 40. However, thanks to his “top-tier driver” provisional, his No. 91 Chevrolet is guaranteed a place in the race, even if he doesn’t qualify. In that case, the number of cars would increase to 41.

Either way, Allgaier’s No. 40 Chevrolet isn’t locked into the main event, as there are already eight non-chartered cars on the entry list.

1. The New York Racing Team plans to field the No. 44 Chevrolet for J.J. Yeley, while Beard Motorsports intends to run the No. 62 Chevrolet with Anthony Alfredo, and Live Fast Motorsports looks to compete with the No. 78 Chevrolet.

It’s been disclosed that Legacy Motor Club will field the number 84 Toyota for Jimmie Johnson, while the participation of Martin Truex Jr. in the number 56 Toyota has been verified by Tricon Garage, backed by Joe Gibbs Racing.

Initially, Garage 66 (previously known as MBM Motorsports) had planned for Mike Wallace to drive their No. 66 Ford in an upcoming race, but NASCAR disqualified Wallace from being able to drive the vehicle. Despite this setback, the team, led by Carl Long, will still participate in the event, with Chandler Smith taking the wheel of their car instead.

In addition to Richard Childress Racing’s No. 33 Chevrolet and Rick Ware Racing’s No. 15 Ford, it’s anticipated that they will have partial schedules in the year 2025, and there’s a strong possibility these schedules might include the famous “Great American Race”. The plans for Team AmeriVet’s No. 50 Chevrolet are still uncertain at this point.

To put it simply, there may be over a dozen cars competing for just four available positions. Will the JR Motorsports team, owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt Miller, successfully debut in the 67th Daytona 500 Cup Series next month?

Allgaier has participated in two runs of the Daytona 500 during his career, both times representing HScott Motorsports, specifically in the years 2014 and 2015. His most recent appearance in the Cup Series was at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May 2024, where he stood in for Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports during the Coca-Cola 600. This was because Larson was participating in the IndyCar’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway instead.

The single-car qualifying round will happen on Wednesday, the 12th of February. After that, we have the Bluegreen Vacations Duel races lined up for Thursday, the 13th (airing at 7:00 p.m. ET on Fox). The main event is set for Sunday, the 16th of February, and it will also be broadcasted on Fox at 2:30 p.m. ET.
