NASCAR Cup Series: Two tracks losing race dates in 2025
As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with decades of racing under my belt, I must admit that the 2025 schedule has stirred a mix of excitement and nostalgia within me. The addition of Bowman Gray Stadium and Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is undoubtedly a game-changer, but losing Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from the calendar feels like a personal blow, having attended several Clash races there over the years.
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series schedule undergoes some changes compared to the 2024 edition, with several race dates being moved around. Additionally, the playoff calendar for next season is noticeably different than this past year’s, potentially introducing a fresh twist to a postseason that has been increasingly criticized over the years.
But despite all of the changes, only two race tracks have actually lost race dates, and only one of the tracks losing a race date is losing a non-exhibition race.
The drop in race count for two tracks comes due to the additions of Bowman Gray Stadium and Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to the calendar.
Two tracks dropping NASCAR Cup Series races in 2025
The iconic Bowman Gray Stadium, last hosting a Cup Series race in 1971, will now play host to the Busch Light Clash preseason exhibition race. Additionally, Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, previously hosting various NASCAR series other than the Cup Series, has been incorporated into the regular season schedule.
For the first time ever, the Clash event was moved away from Daytona International Speedway and instead took place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum between 2022 and 2024. However, in 2025, there will be no USC Trojans’ home game scheduled at this venue, making it the only track to have been completely removed from the calendar for that year, effectively erasing it from the schedule of the previous season.
In the year 2025, Richmond Raceway is set to miss out on a racing event, marking a change from its usual twice-yearly schedule that started in 1959 (with the exception of 2020 when it was affected by adjustments due to pandemic-related scheduling changes). Previously, Richmond hosted races in March and August of 2024.
In August mid-year 2025, the Richmond, Virginia oval track, spanning four laps and approximately 0.75 miles (1.207 kilometers), is planned to hold only one race during the regular season – this event will take place under the lights at night.
The upcoming 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season kicks off on Sunday, February 16, with the 67th running of the Daytona 500. Fox will broadcast this event live from Daytona International Speedway, starting at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
