NASCAR Cup Series: Two teams added to Atlanta entry list
As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast with years of watching paint scrape by at breakneck speeds etched into my memory, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as two underdog teams, NY Racing Team and Live Fast Motorsports, are set to return to the track for the Quaker State 400 presented by Walmart at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Two NASCAR Cup Series teams that didn’t participate in last Sunday night’s Cook Out Southern 500 will be participating in this upcoming Sunday afternoon’s Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which kicks off the four-race, 10-event playoffs.
The New York Racing Squad is preparing to run car number 44 with driver J.J. Yeley, while Live Fast Motorsports will be running car number 78 with B.J. McLeod.
In total, there are 38 vehicles registered to compete in the upcoming 260-lap race on the four-cornered, 1.54-mile (2.478-kilometer) racetrack in Hampton, Georgia. Notably, all non-permanent entries have already secured a spot in this event.
NY Racing Team, Live Fast Motorsports return
For the 2024 season, NY Racing Team makes its sixth appearance overall, but this is only their fifth race start. Unfortunately, Yeley and the team were unable to compete in the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway back in February.
Over the past few months, Yeley has been piloting the No. 44 Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, Charlotte Motor Speedway in May, and Pocono Raceway in July. More recently, Joey Gase had his first Cup Series run since 2021, driving the No. 44 car at Daytona in August.
In an ironic turn of events, Live Fast Motorsports was among the teams attempting but ultimately unable to compete in the Daytona 500. The driver at the helm of their No. 78 Chevrolet was none other than team co-owner McLeod.
Since then, McLeod has represented his team in races at Atlanta in February, Talladega Superspeedway in April, and Daytona in August. Additionally, he’s had some select appearances with MBM Motorsports during the season as well.
As a devoted fan, I’ve got to give a shout-out to MBM Motorsports for being the lone team to enter a non-chartered driver, Timmy Hill, in the Southern 500, piloting the No. 66 Ford. However, they won’t be racing this weekend following their impressive eighth points race start of the year at Darlington.
Tune in to USA Network at 3:00 p.m. ET this Sunday, September 8 for the live broadcast of the Quaker State 400 presented by Walmart from Atlanta Motor Speedway. Start a free trial of FuboTV now and don’t miss any of the action!
