NASCAR Cup Series: Three teams returning for Daytona race

As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement for this weekend’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway! The thrill of watching those powerful machines race around the high-banked oval is simply unmatched.

The Daytona International Speedway is set to stage the second last race of the 26-race 2024 NASCAR Cup Series regular season on the coming Saturday evening.

From 2020 through 2023, the Coke Zero Sugar 400 functioned as the regular season finale. However, it is no longer serving that role because a three-week summer break has been added to the schedule due to NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Paris, France. The race is still scheduled for the same weekend as before.

Consequently, this year’s regular season and playoffs will conclude a week later compared to previous seasons.

Three teams returning for Daytona race

On Saturday evening, three teams not participating on a full-time basis will be participating in a 160-lap race on the four-cornered, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked oval track located in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The NY Racing Team, who missed qualifying for the Daytona 500 season opener in February with J.J. Yeley driving the No. 44 Chevrolet, will be back on track this weekend. Joey Gase will be taking over the wheel this time around. Gase last competed in a NASCAR Cup Series race in the year 2021.

As a long-time racing enthusiast, I have followed Yeley’s career closely and have been impressed by his dedication to the sport. This year, it seems that he has faced some challenges in terms of race appearances as they have only made three starts so far at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, Charlotte Motor Speedway in May, and Pocono Raceway in July. Despite these limited opportunities, I have always admired Yeley’s resilience and determination to keep pushing forward in the world of racing. It will be interesting to see where his career takes him next and if he can secure more race starts in the future.

So far this season, Beard Motorsports has participated in two high-speed race events: one at Daytona in February and another at Talladega Superspeedway in April. In both instances, Anthony Alfredo sat in the driver’s seat of car number 62, which is a Chevrolet. However, this weekend, Parker Retzlaff will take over driving duties.

After missing out on qualifying for the Daytona 500, And Live Fast Motorsports, piloted by team co-owner B.J. McLeod in the No. 78 Chevrolet, are preparing to make their third appearance of the season. Previously, McLeod raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway in February and Talladega in April.

Don’t forget to catch the live telecast of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway this coming Saturday, August 24 on NBC, airing at 7:00 p.m. ET. Why not start a free trial with FuboTV today so you won’t miss out!
