NASCAR Cup Series: Three driver changes confirmed for Richmond race

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with years of trackside experiences under my belt, I must say that the unpredictability and dynamism of the 2024 season have kept me on the edge of my seat! The shared charters at Rick Ware Racing and Kaulig Racing have added an exciting layer to the competition, with a revolving door of drivers taking the wheel.

During the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, two teams, Rick Ware Racing and Kaulig Racing, have utilized shared charter entries among several permanent drivers throughout the season.

In the initial 22 races of the 36-long season, the Rick Ware Racing Ford has seen three distinct drivers behind its wheel, whereas the Kaulig Racing Chevrolet has gone through five different ones.

Kaz Grala is mostly behind the wheel of the No. 15 Ford, but Riley Herbst and Cody Ware have taken turns driving it on occasion. The No. 16 Chevrolet has been shared among A.J. Allmendinger, Ty Dillon, Derek Kraus, Shane van Gisbergen, and Josh Williams.

For approximately three weeks now, there has been no Cup Series race. This is because the Brickyard 400 held in July at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway marked the start of a sort of summer vacation, which was necessitated by NBC’s broadcasting of the Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

In the Brickyard 400, Ware participated in his fourth event of the 2024 season, while Allmendinger made his 10th start, marking his 8th time driving the No. 16 Chevrolet. However, neither driver will be participating in the upcoming race at Richmond Raceway this coming Sunday evening.

Three driver changes confirmed for Richmond

In the upcoming 400-lap race at the Richmond, Virginia racetrack this Sunday, Herbst will be making his fourth start of the season. Meanwhile, Dillon will be competing in his sixth race of the season, marking his fourth drive with the No. 16 Chevrolet.

In the 2024 racing season, the initial 22 races took place at distinct locations. Interestingly, Richmond is slated to be the first track to hold two events, making it unique among the remaining 14 tracks on the calendar for that year. Notably, ten out of these final fourteen tracks have previously hosted a race during the same season.

On Easter Sunday in late March, Richmond played host to a race in the Cup Series, with Grala piloting the No. 15 Ford and Dillon behind the wheel of the No. 16 Chevrolet. The results saw Grala placing 31st and Dillon ending up 29th.

There were no non-charter cars entered in that race, though there is one entered this weekend.

For the upcoming weekend, MBM Motorsports, having made their sixth outing of the 2024 season at the Brickyard 400, will be handing over the No. 66 Ford to Parker Retzlaff. Notably, this will be Retzlaff’s first time racing in a Cup Series event. At present, he races full-time with Jordan Anderson Racing in the Xfinity Series.

At the Brickyard 400, Richard Childress Racing and Legacy Motor Club have increased their teams from two to three vehicles. However, they will only field their regular two chartered entries during the race on Sunday.

Listen to USA Network at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, August 11 for the live telecast of the Cook Out 400 from Richmond Raceway. Sign up for a free trial of FuboTV right now and make sure you catch every moment!
