NASCAR Cup Series team set for unexpected Southern 500 appearance

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with years of watching paint scuff and rubber burn under the tires, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as MBM Motorsports gears up for their return at Darlington Raceway. The unpredictability of this team’s schedule has kept me on my toes all season long, and I can’t wait to see Timmy Hill take the wheel once more in the No. 66 Ford.

So far in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, MBM Motorsports has participated in seven races. Interestingly, they didn’t join the series at all in 2023. However, as the season progressed, they adjusted their original plans for the year.

One way of paraphrasing the given statement could be: Changes made involve skipping the June event at Iowa Speedway and an unexpected participation in the August race at Richmond Raceway, mainly because NASCAR mandated that Parker Retzlaff must first compete in a non-superspeedway race before racing for Beard Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway last Saturday.

Initially, MBM Motorsports had intended to participate in last Saturday’s race at Daytona too, but the No. 66 Ford wasn’t listed among the entrants. This could have been fortunate because it would have led to five non-charter cars vying for only four spots, which meant one car would have been left out of the competition (DNQ).

Originally, Carl Long’s team wasn’t planning to participate in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway this coming Sunday evening. However, they have been scheduled to race for the first time since the event three weeks ago at Richmond. This upcoming race is a grueling 366-lap event on the four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer), egg-shaped oval in Darlington, South Carolina.

MBM Motorsports to return at Darlington

Timmy Hill is gearing up for his second official race of the 2024 season, counting the non-points All-Star Open exhibition race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May as well. His fourth appearance this year will be driving the No. 66 Ford. Earlier, he also raced at Circuit of the Americas in March.

Among the six racers who have driven for MBM Motorsports this season, Hill is one of them. The others are Retzlaff, David Starr, Chad Finchum, Josh Bilicki, and B.J. McLeod. Notably, McLeod is the only one among these drivers who has raced twice for the team in the year 2024.

Despite the fact that MBM Motorsports’ strategies can be adjusted at any time during the 2024 season, they are at present set to participate in a total of five playoff races.

The team’s post-season strategy involves participating in races at Bristol Motor Speedway on the 21st of September (Saturday), Kansas Speedway on the 29th of September (Sunday), Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on the 13th of October (Sunday), Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the 20th of October (Sunday), and Phoenix Raceway on the 10th of November (Sunday).

No drivers have been confirmed by the team for any of those races.

Tune into USA Network for live broadcasting of the Cook Out Southern 500, starting at 6:00 p.m. ET this coming Sunday, September 1st. To ensure you don’t miss this crucial race marking the end of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series regular season schedule, sign up for a free FuboTV trial now!
