NASCAR Cup Series: Richmond race not being broadcast on NBC

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades under my belt, I must say that the shifting tides of broadcast networks has been a rollercoaster ride. From NBC to USA Network and back again, it seems like we’re constantly adjusting our TV dials. But hey, who needs sleep when you’ve got NASCAR races to watch, right?

As a devoted NASCAR fan, I’m eagerly anticipating this Sunday night as Richmond Raceway takes center stage for the first time in the 2024 season, hosting not one but two races! After a three-week hiatus due to NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Paris, France, it feels great to be back and ready for some high-octane action. The Cook Out 400 is the 23rd race on the regular season schedule, and I can hardly wait to see who will take the checkered flag!

As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast, I must say that switching the broadcast of this weekend’s race at Richmond from NBC to USA Network feels like a step back for me. Over the years, I have grown accustomed to watching races on NBC and its sister networks, as they offer comprehensive coverage with expert analysis and in-depth insights into the world of stock car racing. The move to USA Network, while understandable due to scheduling conflicts, leaves me concerned about the quality of coverage I can expect.

The late March race at Richmond was also shown on the alternate channel during Fox’s portion of the broadcast schedule, that being Fox Sports 1.

Richmond race not being shown on NBC

As a long-time racing enthusiast and someone who has followed NASCAR for years, I must say that I’m quite excited about the upcoming Cook Out 400 race. With three of the four races already having been shown on NBC, it’s clear that this season is shaping up to be an exciting one. Personally, I have always appreciated the high-speed thrills and intense competition that NASCAR provides, and the Cook Out 400 being the fourth of six races to be aired on USA Network during the regular season only adds to the anticipation. I can’t wait to see which drivers will rise to the top and battle it out for the win!

During the regular season, USA Network will air the races at Michigan International Speedway on August 18 (Sunday) and Darlington Raceway on September 1 (Sunday). Meanwhile, NBC will broadcast the event at Daytona International Speedway on August 24 (Saturday).

In simple terms, the postseason, which spans over ten races and consists of four rounds, is scheduled. The initial four rounds will air on USA Network, while the final six races will be broadcasted on NBC. These first four races on USA Network mark the start of the playoffs, and the remaining six races on NBC will conclude the season.

2024 season concludes 10-year media deal

In the upcoming year, we’ll kick off a fresh media contract spanning seven years, lasting till 2031. Notably, NBC will only air 14 races, down from their current 20.

NBC will reduce its coverage from ten races to just four, whereas USA Network, which took over NBC Sports Network’s role as an alternative channel during NBC’s section following the latter’s closure at the end of 2021, will continue with ten races.

The number of races where Fox will have broadcasting rights will decrease from 16 to 12 (including the two exhibition events), due to the inclusion of Amazon Prime Video and TNT Sports, who will each cover five races.

Instead of splitting the racing action between multiple channels like in past seasons, I’m stoked to know that Fox Sports 1 is going to broadcast a significant chunk (nine out of fourteen) of the races for us gamers next season. That means only nine out of the total 38 races will be shown on either Fox or NBC, keeping our gaming screens more focused and enjoyable!

Beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 11, USA Network will air live coverage of the Cook Out 400 from Richmond Raceway. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin won at Richmond in March, while RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher claimed victory for last year’s race. To catch all the excitement, sign up now for a free trial of FuboTV!
