NASCAR Cup Series: One track losing a race date in 2025

As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast who has attended races at Richmond Raceway more times than I can count, I must say I’m both excited and saddened by the changes in the 2025 schedule. On one hand, the addition of a race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City is a thrilling prospect, adding an international flavor to the series that I’ve longed for.

For the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, there are several modifications to the schedule compared to last year, including alterations in dates and rearrangements, as well as significant adjustments to several rounds of the playoffs.

Indeed, only one alteration has been made regarding the specific locations included in the 36-race championship itinerary.

A new race event is scheduled for Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in mid-June. Previously, the NASCAR Cup Series has not held a race at this 17-turn, 4.303-kilometer (2.674-mile) road course located in Mexico City, Mexico. However, from 2005 to 2008, the Xfinity Series did compete there.

As a result of the addition of the Mexico race, Richmond Raceway has lost its spring race date.

The Richmond, Virginia oval track, spanning 0.75 miles (1.207 kilometers) and consisting of four laps, is set for one appearance in the 2025 schedule. This event will take place towards the end of August and serve as the second-to-last race of the regular season. In 2024, it hosted two races; one on Easter Sunday in late March and another in mid-August as well.

2021 marks the first year since 1958 that Richmond has scheduled just one race date for its track. From 1953 to 1958, it hosted a Cup Series race annually; however, it didn’t get a second annual race date until 1959.

From 1959 up until 2020, the track had always hosted more than one race per season. However, in 2020, due to numerous alterations brought about by pandemic-related limitations, one of its two planned races was canceled.

Apart from the change in location for regular events, it’s worth noting that the preseason event, known as the Busch Light Clash, will now be held at Bowman Gray Stadium rather than Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This marks a shift after three consecutive years at the latter. The race is planned for February 2nd, and Fox will air live coverage commencing at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

The upcoming 2025 NASCAR Cup Series will kick off on Sunday, February 16, with the highly anticipated 67th Daytona 500. Fox will air live broadcasting from 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time onwards.
