NASCAR Cup Series: One driver change confirmed for Daytona race

As a seasoned NASCAR fan with decades of cheering under my belt, I must say, the ever-changing roster of drivers in some teams keeps the excitement levels high! The unpredictability of who will be behind the wheel each week adds an element of surprise that only enhances the thrill of the race.

In the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, two of the thirty-six car slots have seen multiple drivers take turns behind the wheel during the season.

One of the two vehicles will be driven by a new person during this coming Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway, compared to who was driving it in the rain-postponed FireKeepers Casino 400 on Monday at Michigan International Speedway.

For the upcoming race, Cody Ware will be back for his second consecutive event, driving the No. 15 Rick Ware Racing Ford. This will be his sixth outing of the season. However, the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet will see a new driver this time around.

Kaulig Racing make another driver change

Shane van Gisbergen is preparing to embark on his fifth race of the Cup Series season with Matt Kaulig’s team, where he regularly races full-time in the Xfinity Series. He will be driving the No. 16 Chevrolet. His last appearance in the Cup Series was at the Chicago Street Course in early July.

Among the five drivers who have taken turns driving car number 16 this season, Van Gisbergen is one of them. The other four are his two permanent Xfinity Series teammates, A.J. Allmendinger and Josh Williams, along with Ty Dillon and Derek Kraus.

Regarding the No. 15 Ford, Ware is one of the three drivers who have participated in races this year. The other two include Kaz Grala, who has competed in most of the races, and Riley Herbst.

Four standard cars will join the lineup for this weekend’s 160-lap race on the Daytona Beach, Florida, four-cornered, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked oval. This makes it the fourth event of the year where a full 40-car roster will be filled.

Richard Childress Racing plans to introduce a third car, numbered 33, which will be driven by Austin Hill. Meanwhile, four-team outfits – NY Racing Team, Beard Motorsports, and Live Fast Motorsports – are all gearing up for their return. Joey Gase will pilot the No. 44 Chevrolet for NY Racing Team, Parker Retzlaff will drive the No. 62 Chevrolet for Beard Motorsports, and B.J. McLeod will take charge of the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports.

Tune into NBC at 7:00 p.m. ET this Sunday, August 24th, for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 live from Daytona International Speedway. Last year’s winner, Chris Buescher of RFK Racing, is ready to defend his title. Don’t miss it! Sign up now for a free trial of FuboTV and catch all the action.
