NASCAR Cup Series: Full qualifying order revealed for Southern 500
As a devoted NASCAR enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement as I gaze upon the qualifying order for the upcoming Cook Out Southern 504 at Darlington Raceway. The track where history is made, and legends are born, will once again be the stage for an electrifying race night on Labor Day weekend.
From 2020 through 2023, Darlington Raceway has hosted the opening race of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs annually. In the year 2024, it’s planned that the track will instead be hosting the final event of the regular season.
As a dedicated race fan, I’m excitedly looking forward to the 366-lap Cook Out Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend this year. Unlike previous seasons, the playoffs are now scheduled to conclude a week later due to NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Paris, France. This adjustment has resulted in an extended summer break, making the thrilling oval races at Darlington, South Carolina’s four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) egg-shaped track even more eagerly awaited!
The pecking order for the prestigious race on Sunday evening was established using a new four-factor system that NASCAR unveiled in 2024. A comprehensive explanation of this equation is available at the provided link.
In each qualifying group, the top five drivers with the quickest times will move on to a final race-off for the best starting spot.
Since the NASCAR Cup Series competed at Darlington in May, there’s been an adjustment to the second qualifying round format. Now, it’s organized into groups instead of being a single event.
