NASCAR Cup Series at risk of a late Michigan schedule change

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with countless hours spent cheering for my favorite drivers under various weather conditions, I must admit that the forecast for this weekend’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway has me a bit worried. Rain delays and postponements are part of the sport’s charm, but they can be a real test of patience!

After a three-week hiatus caused by NBC’s broadcasting of the Summer Olympics in Paris, France, the NASCAR Cup Series is all geared up for its second race.

On a Sunday afternoon in 2024, Michigan International Speedway plans to hold the FireKeepers Casino 400, which marks race number 24 out of 26 for the regular season. However, as per The Weather Channel’s prediction, the weather may not be particularly favorable.

On Sunday afternoon, there’s about a 60% likelihood of rain, and it increases to around 70% in the early evening hours. However, the chances of rain are quite low on Monday, at just 8%.

The qualifying session for the upcoming 200-lap race at the Brooklyn, Michigan oval on Saturday had to be canceled due to rain. Instead, the starting order for this four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) track will be determined using a specific method, as detailed here.

A full lineup for Sunday’s race is available here.

Michigan race at risk of postponement?

2024 season’s qualifying session on Saturday was washed out by rain for only the second time, mirroring an incident at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in June. Similar to that event, the following day also brought more unfavorable weather, delaying the race. However, unlike the New Hampshire race, this one was completed in its entirety on the originally planned day.

It’s important to mention that similar to New Hampshire, Michigan doesn’t have artificial lighting, which means the timing of NASCAR races could be restricted since it needs to end before sunset. The sun sets in Eastern Time at 8:32 p.m. on Sunday.

The competition will be declared legitimate once we’ve reached either the midpoint or the conclusion of stage two. Since stage two ends following lap 120 on Sunday, the race will officially begin at lap 100, which represents the halfway point.

The race held at Michigan last year initially began on a Sunday, but had to be halted because of rain. It was subsequently picked up and concluded on the following day, which was Monday.

Don’t miss out on USA Network at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time this coming Sunday, August 18th, as they bring you live coverage of the FireKeepers Casino 400 from Michigan International Speedway. Last year’s winner, Chris Buescher from RFK Racing, will be looking to defend his title. If you haven’t signed up for FuboTV yet, now’s your chance to start a free trial!
