NASCAR Cup Series: 4 cars need new drivers for 2025
As a seasoned NASCAR fan with over two decades under my belt, I must say the upcoming driver changes for the 2025 season have set the racing world abuzz! With teams like Kaulig Racing and Rick Ware Racing yet to decide on their drivers, it’s an exciting time filled with speculation and anticipation.
For the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, some teams like Kaulig Racing and Rick Ware Racing are still in the process of finalizing their drivers.
Multiple other squads have implemented adjustments, or they’re prepared for changes, which means they now have open positions to be filled.
Here are four cars that will need new drivers for the 2025 season.
No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet
Corey LaJoie had been expected to stay with Spire Motorsports until 2025 following a multi-year contract renewal last year; however, it’s now public knowledge that he won’t be driving the No. 7 Chevrolet in the upcoming season.
Spire Motorsports has announced that Michael McDowell will take over driving duties from Zane Smith in the No. 71 Chevy, with Smith expected to move on elsewhere due to an unforeseen opening in the No. 7 car. Meanwhile, Carson Hocevar is set for another season as driver of the No. 77 Chevrolet.
No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford
In the upcoming year, McDowell will be leaving Front Row Motorsports after seven seasons, taking on Smith’s role at Spire Motorsports instead.
According to recent confirmations, Noah Gragson will be joining Todd Gilliland on the Stewart-Haas Racing team. Additionally, it’s been announced that the team will expand to three cars, possibly by purchasing one of the three vehicles Stewart-Haas Racing is planning to sell upon closure. Meanwhile, Gene Haas intends to keep the remaining car for his newly established Haas Factory Team, with Cole Custer slated to compete there in 2025.
Gragson’s assigned race car wasn’t disclosed yet, leaving open the possibility that he might drive the No. 34 Ford. Similarly, Gilliland could potentially take over this vehicle if the team decides to shift him from their secondary car, which is often viewed as the main one. In either scenario, Bob Jenkins’ team still needs to decide who will fill the remaining seat.
No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota
Similar to Front Row Motorsports, 23XI Racing currently fields two vehicles. However, anticipation suggests that come 2025, they aim to add a third car to their fleet, achieving this expansion by purchasing a third charter from Stewart-Haas Racing.
Next year, both Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace are due to return. It’s likely that they’ll be joined by a new team member as well.
Next season, it’s rumored that Riley Herbst, currently racing with Stewart-Haas Racing in the Xfinity Series, might join Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan’s team. Meanwhile, Corey Heim, who races full-time with Tricon Garage in the Truck Series, is also being considered as a potential candidate for this new position.
No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Team Chevrolet
As a gaming enthusiast, if the plan unfolds as anticipated in the year 2024, it seems that Trackhouse Racing Team would make history by becoming the third entity to acquire Stewart-Haas Racing’s charter. With Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez set to return for the upcoming season, the focus will undoubtedly shift towards the team’s third car. Let’s keep a close eye on the developments!
The team co-owned by Justin Marks and Pitbull has drivers like Zane Smith and Shane van Gisbergen signed to contracts, but these drivers are not racing for their team at present. Specifically, Zane Smith was lent to Spire Motorsports for the 2024 season, while Shane van Gisbergen is competing full-time for Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series.
In his inaugural race for Trackhouse Racing Team within the Cup Series last year on the streets of Chicago, Van Gisbergen emerged victorious. This year, he’s being considered as a strong contender to team up with Chastain and Suarez.
