NASCAR Cup Series: 3 teams not returning for the Southern 500

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours playing NASCAR games, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia seeing teams like Beard Motorsports, Live Fast Motorsports, and NY Racing Team making their appearances on the track. These underdogs add an exciting element to the sport, just as the scrappy indie studios do in our gaming world.

Three partial-season NASCAR Cup Series competitors showed up for last Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 race held at Daytona International Speedway.

In the extended 164-lap race held at the Daytona Beach, Florida track – a fast, high-banked 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) four-turn oval – Beard Motorsports, Live Fast Motorsports, and NY Racing Team each brought a car that was not part of the charter group to compete.

However, none of the mentioned teams are scheduled to compete in this weekend’s Cook Out Southern 500, which takes place at Darlington Raceway and marks the end of the regular season.

Three teams not returning at Darlington

In the race, Beard Motorsports entered car number 62 driven by Parker Retzlaff. He was key in helping Wood Brothers Racing’s Harrison Burton clinch victory during the last lap of the competition.

This event marked their third competition of the 2024 season, and they have another scheduled for the October playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway. In this upcoming race, Anthony Alfredo will be driving the No. 62 Chevrolet for the third time in 2024, having previously competed at Daytona and Talladega earlier in the season.

In this race, Live Fast Motorsports entered the #78 Chevrolet driven by team co-owner B.J. McLeod. This was their fourth event of the year, even though they didn’t make it to the Daytona 500, the season opener. Besides that, McLeod participated in races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Talladega as well.

The Chevrolet model number 78 is slated to make a comeback for the September playoff competition in Atlanta and the October playoff contest in Talladega. However, the drivers who will be behind the wheel haven’t been announced yet.

Ultimately, the New York Racing Team ran the No. 44 Chevrolet for Joey Gase, who last participated in a Cup Series event back in 2021.

They made their fifth outing this season, but unfortunately didn’t make it to the Daytona 500. J.J. Yeley drove for them in the initial three races of the year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Pocono Raceway.

There are currently no more starts lined up for the No. 44 Chevrolet on the 2024 calendar.

Apart from Richard Childress Racing, no other team entered a non-chartered vehicle in Saturday’s race at Daytona. However, they plan to reduce their fleet to just two cars for the upcoming race at Darlington. They will only field the full-time No. 3 Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon and the No. 8 Chevrolet driven by Kyle Busch.

Despite the list for this Sunday’s 366-lap race at the Darlington, South Carolina oval, an egg-shaped four-turn track spanning 1.366 miles (2.198 kilometers), still has only one non-charter car, MBM Motorsports plans to make a comeback for their eighth run of the year. They will field the No. 66 Ford for Timmy Hill once more.
