NASCAR championship: There's a new No. 2 behind Kyle Larson

As a die-hard NASCAR fan who’s seen my fair share of underdog stories, I can confidently say that Joey Logano’s journey to the Championship 4 this year has been nothing short of remarkable! Remember when he was sitting in last place, barely clinging to hope? Now, he’s not just in the race for the title, but he’s also the second favorite!

As the quarterfinals approached, Joey Logano found himself at the bottom of the rankings due to a disqualification that kept Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports from participating in the round of 12 finale at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval. This left him significantly behind the required position for advancement.

Among the remaining drivers contending for this year’s title, he had the least likely chance of winning, with his odds at 1200 to 1 being the highest.

Keep in mind that the other seven competitors ranked among the top seven based on total points accumulated over the first 32 races of the season. Despite being disqualified, Bowman still managed to finish eighth.

But Logano? 15th.

Despite always qualifying for the Championship 4 in even years since the current format was implemented in 2014, the driver of car No. 22 surprisingly overcame the statistics and secured a spot back in the deciding race, clinching a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

2024 marks the fourth time that Logano has secured his spot in the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway. He achieved this feat by winning the opening race of the round of 8 in 2018, 2020, and now 2024. This victory provides him with an additional two weeks to ready himself for a potential championship title chase.

He won the titles in 2018 and 2022.

Logano 2024 championship odds shorten

At the DraftKings Sportsbook, Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports started the final eight races with a points advantage and was considered the front-runner for the title, carrying odds of +370.

As I secured a more substantial lead over the Championship 4 cutline following the race at Las Vegas, I’ve been pegged as the top pick with odds of +260. After Logano snagged his ticket to the Championship 4, he’s moved up to the second favorite, with his odds dropping significantly to +300.

After finishing second to Logano in the race at Las Vegas, Christopher Bell from Joe Gibbs Racing, who was previously ranked behind Larson with odds of +450, now has shorter odds of +330 due to his performance, placing him in the lead of the points standings.

Full odds can be found here. Odds and availability are always subject to change.

Homestead-Miami Speedway is all set to stage the Straight Talk Wireless 400 on October 27, coming up this Sunday. Bell secured victory in last year’s event. NBC will broadcast the race live starting at 2:30 p.m. ET. Why not sign up for a free trial of FuboTV right now, so you won’t miss out on any exciting moments!
