NASCAR announcement confirms the end of an 11-year hiatus
18-year-old racing talent, Connor Zilisch, who recently joined Trackhouse Racing as a developing driver, is poised to race in the NASCAR Cup Series for the first time during the 2025 season.
On March 2nd at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) road course, Zilisch will race in the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix. This competition will be under the banner of Trackhouse, a team co-owned by Justin Marks and Pitbull, and with Red Bull as the sponsor. You’ll find him behind the wheel of car number 87, a Chevrolet.
Since July 2014, the No. 87 hasn’t seen action in the Cup Series. In that New Hampshire Motor Speedway race, it was Timmy Hill who drove the No. 87 Toyota for NEMCO Motorsports. Over the past six years, a total of 377 races have been held, and this count is expected to reach 379 before the upcoming COTA race.
Car No. 87 back in the NASCAR Cup Series
Race number 87 has participated in a total of 781 events across its career, which spans back to the very first race of the 1949 NASCAR Strictly Stock season – the debut season for professional stock car racing in the U.S. – held at Charlotte Speedway.
Among all drivers associated with car number 87, Buck Baker has the most impressive record, having triumphed in a stunning 26 out of his 419 races. Notably, Jim Paschal is the only other driver to secure a win with this number, achieving it in one of the remaining 362 starts.
Baker clinched his latest victory in the 1963 NASCAR Grand National Series at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, which took place most recently.
Connor Zilisch’s 2025 NASCAR plans
This year, I’m all-in with JR Motorsports for the Xfinity Series! I snatched my first victory with them at Watkins Glen International last season, and I’ve been itching to prove myself in three more races. Now, it’s time to bring the heat full-time!
It’s unclear if Zilisch will continue racing in the Cup Series next year, but there’s a good chance that Trackhouse Racing could increase his race appearances as the season unfolds.
On Sunday, March 2, starting at 3:30 PM Eastern Time, the exciting EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix will air live on Fox directly from Circuit of the Americas.
