NASCAR alters all-time wins list with a race from 53 years ago
As a seasoned gamer of NASCAR’s thrilling races and a connoisseur of its rich history, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic exhilaration upon learning that Bobby Allison has officially surpassed Kyle Busch with 85 career victories in the NASCAR Cup Series. This triumphant moment, however, takes me back to my early days of following the sport, when I eagerly collected every piece of information about the legendary drivers and their iconic races.
In the year 2024, it’s been confirmed that Bobby Allison holds a higher number of NASCAR Cup Series wins compared to Kyle Busch.
Back in August of 1971, Bobby Allison emerged victorious at the Myers Brothers Memorial event held at Bowman Gray Stadium. However, this particular triumph didn’t make it into the 84 wins that were attributed to him throughout his impressive 25-year tenure in the Cup Series.
In February 2025, NASCAR will make a comeback at Bowman Gray Stadium for the preseason Busch Light Clash exhibition race. This will be the first race held at this four-turn, quarter-mile track since 1971. Given that the previous race was in essence the same event, NASCAR decided to recognize Bobby Allison’s win from 1971 as a legitimate victory.
As a devoted NASCAR enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the Myers Brothers Memorial race, which, unlike traditional Cup Series events, didn’t formally declare a winner due to its unique composition. This intriguing event showcased a blend of Grand National (Cup Series) vehicles and smaller Grand American cars, as NASCAR revealed in their Wednesday afternoon statement.
Back in the groove of ’71, I was there when Bobby Allison clinched his 85th NASCAR victory at Bowman Gray on August 6. That race was a unique blend of Cup cars and smaller Grand American vehicles. With my trusty Grand American car beneath me, I claimed the checkered flag and, since it wasn’t initially recognized as a Cup win, this triumph is now officially added to my tally.

Six races that season featured the same, but this was the only one that didn’t count, even after Allison was given a trophy in victory lane.
In the 250-lap race, Allison took over the lead from Richard Petty on lap 113 and maintained it for the remaining 138 laps. He crossed the finish line ahead of Petty, securing a three-second victory.
Allison’s recent victory now places him as the only one in fourth position on the all-time victories record, with just Petty (200), David Pearson (105), and Jeff Gordon (93) ahead of him.
While this most recent victory counts as his 85th career triumph number-wise, looking back, it’s actually his 25th overall win.
As a dedicated racing enthusiast, I’ve got to share some exciting news! The legendary racer from Hueytown, Alabama, who just so happens to be 86 years young, has been neck-and-neck with Darrell Waltrip on the all-time wins list. However, a recent milestone has moved Darrell up to fifth place, leaving our hero still holding onto a tie for sixth with Jimmie Johnson and Cale Yarborough, both of whom have also racked up 83 victories each. It’s an exhilarating race to the top!
The Busch Light Clash in 2025 is planned for February 2nd Sunday, which is about two weeks prior to the commencement of the season, marked by the 67th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. The exact start time hasn’t been determined yet, and the event will likely air on either Fox or Fox Sports 1.
