NASCAR: A.J. Allmendinger back at Kaulig, but not in regular car

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with years of racing experience under my belt, I can confidently say that A.J. Allmendinger‘s journey is one for the books! The man has proven his mettle time and again, and his versatility is truly admirable.

AJ Allmendinger, a racer for Kaulig Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on a full-time basis, has made some starts in the Cup Series for the same team during the 2024 season. Previously, he was a full-time driver in the Cup Series with this team in 2023.

For the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, Allmendinger will be the full-time driver of the No. 16 Chevrolet again, a role he’s assumed whenever he’s competed this year. This vehicle has been jointly driven by five racers this season, among them being his Xfinity Series companions, Shane van Gisbergen and Josh Williams, along with Derek Kraus and Ty Dillon.

For the upcoming Sunday afternoon race in the round of 16 playoffs at Watkins Glen International, Allmendinger is set to make a comeback. However, instead of driving the No. 16 Chevrolet, as he did four weeks ago at Michigan International Speedway, he will be behind a different car this time.

Allmendinger driving No. 13 Chevrolet, not No. 16 Chevrolet

Over the course of 11 races this season, Allmendinger has piloted the No. 16 Chevy in nine instances. In the remaining two, he’s operated the No. 13 Chevy, a non-permanent entry that Kaulig’s team has taken to selected events since last year.

As a die-hard racing fan, I’ve been thrilled to see Kaulig Racing expand its fleet! When van Gisbergen piloted the No. 16 Chevrolet at Circuit of the Americas in March and later at the Chicago Street Course in July, they added the No. 13 Chevrolet for Allmendinger. This weekend, I’m excited to see van Gisbergen continue behind the wheel of the No. 16 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen, while Allmendinger takes over the No. 13 Chevrolet once more. The anticipation is building!

This season, Kaulig Racing has decided not to assign the No. 13 Chevrolet to any additional drivers, having run it five times in the previous year, with four races given to Chandler Smith and one to Jonathan Davenport.

Amongst the list of entries for the Sunday afternoon’s 90-lap Go Bowling event at The Glen, the Chevrolet number 13 is one of only two non-permanent cars. Given this exclusivity, it automatically qualifies for the race.

23XI Racing plans to deploy the #50 Toyota in their lineup, with Juan Pablo Montoya at the wheel. Since 2014, Montoya hasn’t participated in a NASCAR Cup Series race.

2024 season saw Allmendinger securing three sixth positions, one of which was at COTA with car number 13. He narrowly missed out on a top-five finish in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in February and at Sonoma Raceway in June as well.

Join FuboTV today on a free trial, and tune in to USA Network at 3:00 p.m. ET this coming Sunday, September 15, for the live telecast of the Go Bowling event at The Glen from Watkins Glen International. Don’t miss out!
