NASCAR: 2024 Watkins Glen qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades of racing under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Go Bowling at The Glen is shaping up to be a thrilling spectacle! The addition of this playoff race at Watkins Glen International means we’ll have multiple road course races during the playoffs for the first time ever. It’s an exciting change that promises to keep us on the edge of our seats!

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited to share that starting from the 2024 season, Watkins Glen International will host a NASCAR Cup Series playoff race instead of a regular season one! This means more intense, nail-biting action for us fans. Mark your calendars, folks, because this Sunday afternoon, we’ve got the Go Bowling at The Glen to look forward to! Let’s see who takes home the checkered flag in this thrilling race.

Including a 90-lap race on the eight-corner, 2.454-mile (3.949-kilometer) road course in Watkins Glen, New York – the second race of the four-round, 10-race postseason – marks a historical first: there will be multiple road course races during the playoffs this year. The Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval is scheduled for round two next month as well.

As a gamer in the racing world, I’ve noticed that on road courses, we don’t go for individual qualifying runs. Instead, drivers are divided into two groups based on a specific qualifying metric that NASCAR has been using since 2020. This system is explained in greater detail here.

During the playoffs, we don’t consider the playoff drivers until all other drivers have been assigned positions first. As a result, each group has eight playoff drivers.

In simpler terms, the five quickest drivers from each group move on to a final round without groups for deciding the pole position. The positions of the top 10 at the start of the race will be based solely on speeds achieved in this final round.
