NASCAR: 2024 Phoenix playoff qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades of racing under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement for this weekend’s Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway! From the moment Homestead-Miami Speedway passed the torch to Avondale, Arizona in 2020, this track has been a thrilling addition to the NASCAR circuit.

After competing in 35 events, the decisive moment arrives this Sunday afternoon with the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway. This race has been hosting the Championship 4 since it replaced Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2020.

The driver who finishes first among the four championship candidates in the 312-lap race on the Avondale, Arizona oval this coming Sunday will be named the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champion.

2021 series champion Ryan Blaney from Team Penske, together with his teammate Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing, and William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports, are all geared up for a thrilling title fight in the upcoming season.

On Saturday, group qualifying based on a four-factor calculation developed by NASCAR will be implemented. The groups and the order within each group have already been decided using this method, which was introduced in 2020. You can find an explanation of the entire formula here.

Keep in mind that the four championship contenders aren’t included in the calculation until all other drivers have been assigned to their particular groups. Consequently, two title contenders will be eliminated at the conclusion of the first group, and two more at the end of the second.

In the upcoming round, the quickest five racers from each group will move forward. Interestingly, this round will be organized by groups, unlike the time NASCAR raced at Phoenix in March, where it wasn’t group-based.

In an unanticipated move made in June, this rule modification implies a significant shift. Now, it’s not just the second quickest qualifier who might miss out on the front row, but potentially even the sixth one as well.
