NASCAR: 2024 Charlotte playoff qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades of racing under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway promises to be an exhilarating spectacle! Having attended countless races on various tracks, the unique challenge of the Roval course never ceases to captivate me. The addition of a second road course race in the playoffs this season has only heightened my anticipation.

Ever since the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval was incorporated into the NASCAR Cup Series playoff calendar in 2018, replacing its previous 1.5-mile oval race, it has stood alone as the sole road course event on the four-round, 10-race playoff schedule.

This year, however, things have changed, because for the first time ever in Cup Series history, Watkins Glen International held a playoff race, which means that in 2024 there will be two playoff road course races.

For six years now, the Bank of America Roval 400, which takes place on the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) race track in Concord, North Carolina, has been a deciding event due to its position on the calendar. Since 2020, it has also been the culminating race of the round of 12 each year.

At the Charlotte Roval, group qualifying is employed instead of traditional single-car qualifying sessions because it’s a road course. In this setup, each group undergoes timing, and the drivers within each group are arranged based on a four-factor metric that NASCAR has been using since 2020. More details about this metric can be found in the linked breakdown.

Keep in mind that the metric doesn’t include the 12 playoff contenders until every other driver has been assigned to a group, thus maintaining an equal distribution with exactly six drivers in each group.

In each group, the top five drivers, regardless of whether they’re part of the playoffs or not, move forward to a second-round competition for a chance at securing the pole position.
