NASCAR: 2024 Brickyard 400 qualifying updates, full starting lineup
As a die-hard NASCAR fan and someone who grew up watching the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I can’t contain my excitement as we approach this year’s race. The return of fans to the grandstands and the debut of the Next Gen car at the iconic oval have made this season opener at Indy a truly special occasion.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will hold the Brickyard 400 for the first time since 2020, and this notable NASCAR Cup Series event will have spectators in the stands for the first time since 2019.
In Speedway, Indiana, the iconic 4-lap, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval was taken off the schedule prior to the 2021 racing season. Instead, the interior road course became the focal point. However, after a three-year hiatus, the historic oval is making its comeback and will host its inaugural Cup Series race featuring the Next Gen car in the upcoming season.
At NASCAR events, a track with a length equivalent to Daytona International Speedway is not classified as a superspeedway. Consequently, each competitor is slated for just one qualifying lap.
Since 2020, NASCAR has employed a particular method to decide the compositions and the sequence of qualifiers for each group. The intricacies of this calculation are explained in detail here.
As a longtime racing enthusiast and fanatic follower of Formula One, I can’t help but be intrigued by the latest announcement regarding the qualifying process for this season’s races. Last year, the top five drivers from each group moved on to the next round, while those who didn’t advance were relegated to the back of the grid. However, this year things are shaking up a bit.
As a longtime NASCAR fan and avid race follower, I have witnessed numerous changes to the qualifying format over the years. However, the latest modification has left me both intrigued and slightly perplexed. Previously, the fastest lap times in the second round determined the entire top 10 lineup. But now, things have taken a new turn. The results of the second round are no longer solely based on individual lap speeds; instead, they’re group-based.
