NASCAR: 2024 Atlanta playoff qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating virtual racetracks, I can tell you that the real-world NASCAR action at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Sunday is not to be missed! With its repaved superspeedway status, the Quaker State 400 presented by Walmart promises a thrilling race.

The Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of seven tracks included in the four-round, ten-race schedule for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series postseason. Additionally, it held a race during the regular season’s 26 races. This coming Sunday afternoon, it will kick off the playoffs.

The Quaker State 400, taking place on Sunday and sponsored by Walmart, is set to be a 260-lap race that circles the four-turn, 1.54-mile (2.478-kilometer) track in Hampton, Georgia, often referred to as a superspeedway since it was repaved post-2021.

Despite Atlanta not being as large as Daytona International Speedway or Talladega Superspeedway, it’s classified as a superspeedway, which implies that traditional group qualifying methods aren’t employed to establish the starting grid.

As a gamer, I use a specific ranking system, similar to the one NASCAR has been using since 2020, to determine my starting position in each race. The details of this formula are fully explained here if you’re interested.

In other words, the current formula differs from the one used during the regular season primarily because it distinguishes between drivers competing in the playoffs and those not participating in them.

During the ranking process for the metric calculation, playoff competitors are exclusively compared to one another, while non-playoff contenders are also exclusively matched against fellow playoff participants. This arrangement guarantees that non-playoff racers will be positioned ahead of playoff competitors in the sequence for qualifying.
