Naomi Ackie reveals she was told she’d have to work ‘twice as hard and get half as much’ for roles as a woman of colour  – as she is awarded prestigious gong at ELLE Style Awards

The acclaimed actress Naomi Ackie shared that, at the outset of her career, her parents advised her she’d need to put in twice the effort to achieve only half the recognition, given the challenges of being a performer of color within the industry.

This year at the ELLE Style Awards happening on September 9 in 2025, it’s been officially revealed that the 34-year-old actor from Blink Twice is set to receive the prestigious title of Performer of the Year.

On the front page of ELLE UK’s October edition, Naomi candidly discussed her journey with close confidant and fellow actress, Zoë Kravitz. They delved into the significance of trusting one’s intuition, overcoming obstacles encountered by women of color in the entertainment world, and discovering personal tranquility.

As I embarked on my acting journey, the fears my parents held about the industry became my own reality. I watched peers who took risks that seemed precarious, engaging in activities beyond my financial reach.

Naomi clarified: “I noticed some friends, not belonging to racial minorities, making errors or acting carelessly in a manner that I can’t risk. I only get one chance with this opportunity.

Also, you’re expected to maintain this demeanor, which stems from societal conditioning that women should be both silent yet responsible for everyone’s safety and well-being, while balancing the need to appear both attractive and endearing – somewhat akin to the Barbie character’s dialogue.

As a champion for inclusive lifestyles, I’d like to share an insight: Navigating life as a woman of color can sometimes be a complex journey. Preconceived notions and biases, which are unfortunately prevalent in our society, can subtly influence various aspects of life. It’s essential to understand that these biases may impact perceptions and experiences, making it even more important for all of us to strive for empathy, understanding, and fairness in everything we do.

She stated: ‘Our being Black can be seen as either attractive or troublesome. There’s always a hint of apprehension whenever a casting call is posted, as if to wonder, “Who might take this opportunity to express their thoughts now?”‘

As I eagerly take on the role of a devoted supporter, I’m excited to share that at the age of 36, I had the privilege to cast the talented Naomi as our lead character, Frida, in the captivating black comedy psychological thriller, filë. This project turned out to be an exceptional success, a testament to Naomi’s impeccable acting skills and our collective effort.

During the interview, the two ladies discussed their unique camaraderie, with Naomi remarking, “On set, I often commented about how uncommon it is for women to form friendships akin to those shared by male directors and actors.

I can’t help but notice the exceptional collaborations that have flourished between directors like Martin Scorsese, Luca Guadagnino, and Quentin Tarantino, and their respective stars such as Robert De Niro, Timothée Chalamet, and Samuel L. Jackson. These duos have consistently produced some of the most captivating films in cinema.

In this role, I had a unique connection with the director, as if we were more than just colleagues. Previously, it often felt as though I was a student seeking approval, with thoughts of ‘Oh dear, do they like me? Am I performing well enough?’

In this job, I developed a close bond with the director that made us seem more like friends than just work associates. Earlier on, it sometimes felt like I was a pupil trying to earn their teacher’s approval, worrying about whether they thought I was doing a good job or not.

They also discussed having fun with fashion, with Zoë complimenting her pal.

Recently, I came across a photo of you, and I couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘Wow, who’s that?’ You giggled in response.

As I reflect, it was truly enjoyable! I’ve had a longstanding appreciation for how clothing enhances others, yet I’ve hesitated to experiment with my own style. However, reaching my thirties seems to have ignited a newfound confidence in me.

‘The 30s were challenging times for me, but I found solace in embracing joy through my wardrobe choices. I started wearing clothes that bring a smile to my face, and I don’t worry too much about what others might think.’

In Blink Twice, Channing Tatum – Zoë’s ex-fianceé – stars as a tech billionaire named Slater King.

At the charity event he attends, he encounters a woman serving drinks whose name is Frida. He extends an invitation for her to accompany him and his companions to his personal tropical paradise island.

Yet, upon finding out, Frida learns that her ideal holiday isn’t all it appears, and she has to solve the riddle and devise a means of escape.

Last year, Zoë adorned the front page of W Magazine’s Autumn Fashion Edition, sharing insights about the factors that propelled her to pen a psychological thriller.

In the summer of 2017, the High Fidelity star expressed feelings of growing discontent towards societal and cultural power structures.

One day, following a conversation with my buddy, I headed home and jotted down the authentic title of the movie: “Sexist Title.

She went on to say: “Later, around October I believe, all the events involving… let’s call him X, for the sake of avoiding mentioning his name, took place. I prefer not to use his name as I don’t wish to grant him any attention.

The October issue of ELLE UK is on sale from 4 September.
