Nancy’s absence on Call the Midwife leaves a huge hole in the show
When Nancy (Megan Cusack) of “Call the Midwife” shared news about a new job opportunity with a house attached, her engagement to Roger Noble (Conor O’Donnell), and even winning over her stern future mother-in-law, few could have foreseen that this would mark the end of her journey on the series.
Even though it was just the first episode of the current season, fans haven’t seen her in her vibrant, fur-edged coat adorned with her new boyfriend and daughter yet. She had made a grand entrance wearing this eye-catching attire and grinning broadly as she walked down the street accompanied by her Nonnatus friends before attending her engagement party.
At the start of the new season, Cusack had assured fans that her character’s story wouldn’t reach its conclusion yet, and she has continued to express this idea. In a recent conversation, Cusack disclosed that Nancy is currently at Netherditch Hospital, which suggests a temporary absence rather than a permanent goodbye.
The actress expressed, “She’s more focused on her professional life right now. In other words, she’s quite busy with work and has taken up a new position, but it doesn’t imply that you won’t have a chance to meet her again.” (Radio Times)
Yet, even though this situation provides a slight sense of reassurance that it’s not severe, it still raises the intriguing query: why hasn’t she come back yet?
Nancy’s sudden departure from the show seems surprising due to its quick pace. A beloved character, the nurse, transitioned from finding love at Christmas to adopting a fresh start just like New Year’s resolutions in the blink of an eye.
Beyond merely giving off an unreliable vibe due to its rapid tempo, the situation also leaves viewers feeling uneasy as if something is amiss. Moreover, fans were deprived of sharing in the triumphant experience of a character like Roger, who has yearned for stability for herself and her daughter Colette (played by Francesca Fullilove), for such an extended period of time.
Regardless of Nancy moving to Netherditch, her continued connection with the Nonnatus team would have made the narrative far more engaging, with occasional phone calls or spontaneous late-night movie outings.
Compared to the development of Helen George’s character, Trixie, Nancy’s storyline becomes increasingly strange and her absence grows significantly more noticeable.
Trixie lives in New York with her husband Matthew (Olly Rix) and son Jonty (Archie O’Callaghan). Even though she frequently appears a few episodes apart, it feels like there’s hardly enough time to miss her charisma before she jets off again, packing her Big Apple escapades in her carry-on for the next flight.
Nancy’s rustic countryside home seems excessively distant for convenient visits, which leaves viewers puzzled about why this aspect isn’t explored in the plotlines. The lack of mention only amplifies her conspicuous absence, leading fans to speculate that there may be hidden storylines unfolding off-screen.
For now Cusack insists that life is pretty rosy for the nurse stating:
[Roger] is a charming, fantastic man who always shows kindness towards [Nancy] and Colette.” (It seems that Cusack might have had to rearrange her schedule due to external job commitments. As the penultimate and final episodes of “Call the Midwife” approach, viewers will be eagerly waiting to see if the writers will address this perplexing absence in a fulfilling manner.)
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
