Nancy Cartwright Doesn’t Want AI to Take Over Role on ‘The Simpsons’

As a lifelong movie and TV fan, I was really interested to hear Nancy Cartwright – the incredible voice of Bart Simpson for almost 40 years – speak out about AI. With The Simpsons just hitting its 800th episode, she’s a true icon! Beyond Bart, she’s given life to so many memorable characters like Ralph Wiggum, Nelson Muntz, and Todd Flanders. And she’s made it clear: she’s not backing down and won’t let artificial intelligence take her place. It’s great to see someone with so much history in the industry standing up for artists!

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, voice actor Nancy Cartwright explained why she believes AI can’t replace her or other voice actors. Though she didn’t repeat Bart Simpson’s famous line, she emphasized that AI lacks the emotional range she brings to her performances. Cartwright expressed a desire to choose her successor, rather than have an AI voice model take over the role of Bart Simpson.

I’d rather pick a person to take over, not AI. The reason is simple: AI lacks empathy and genuine feeling, which I believe is crucial. While AI can mimic someone like Nancy Cartwright, I bring real passion to what I do. As humans, we have a spiritual side and can connect with others emotionally in a way that I don’t think a computer ever could.

They’ll Never Stop ‘The Simpsons’

Fox

After an incredible 800 episodes, The Simpsons continues to be a hit! The show has been renewed all the way through Season 40, meaning it will air through at least 2029. Plus, Disney and 20th Century Studios are finally making a sequel to The Simpsons Movie from 2007, titled The Simpsons 2, which is scheduled to hit theaters on September 3, 2027. However, voice actor Nancy Cartwright recently brought up a question many fans have been wondering for years: what will happen to the show if one of the original voice actors decides to retire or, sadly, passes away?

Over its many years on television, The Simpsons has handled the loss of its voice actors in a consistent way. When Phil Hartman tragically passed away in 1999, his characters, Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure, were written off the show. The same happened after Marcia Wallace’s death in 2013, with her character Edna Krabappel being retired and Bart getting a new teacher, voiced by Kerry Washington. Following the passing of Russi Taylor, Grey DeLisle took over the voices of Martin Prince and the twins Sherri and Terri. Most recently, in 2025, Pamela Hayden retired, and Kelly Macleod became the new voice of Milhouse.

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Nancy Cartwright voicing Bart Simpson, but if The Simpsons continues, a replacement voice actor might eventually be necessary. Some believe this would be a good time to end the show, but Disney clearly values the series, and the actors still love their work after all these years. No matter what happens with The Simpsons in the future, one thing is clear: artificial intelligence could never capture the humor and emotion that Nancy Cartwright and the entire talented cast bring to each episode.
