nanamica Teams up With Mēdeia1.0 for a Shomei Tomatsu Photography Capsule

Summary

  • Japanese label nanamica has announced a collaborative capsule collection with Mēdeia1.0, an initiative dedicated to communicating global and social issues through fashion and art
  • The collection features imagery from “Plastics,” a photo series by the late, highly influential postwar Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu, capturing marine debris on the Kujukuri coastline
  • Aligning with nanamica’s core slogan, “One Ocean, All Lands,” the release aims to raise awareness about the severe, worsening issue of marine pollution

Fashion often reflects what’s happening in the world, and nanamica is doing just that with its newest collection. The well-known Japanese brand, celebrated for its practical yet classic designs, has partnered with Mēdeia1.0 to create a collection with a strong message. By combining nanamica’s quality clothing with impactful historical photos, the collaboration hopes to raise awareness about the growing problem of pollution in our oceans.

This collection centers around the work of Shomei Tomatsu (1930–2012), a highly respected and impactful photographer from postwar Japan. It particularly features his series “Plastics,” a moving collection originally showcased in Mēdeia2.0’s ISSUE N ̊06, depicting harsh images of trash found on the beaches of Kujukuri. This imagery strongly aligns with nanamica’s core values and their motto, “One Ocean, All Lands,” emphasizing the interconnectedness of the ocean and the entire world.

For the first time, you can experience the unique realism of Tomatsu’s work through a new clothing line. The collection features two styles of the “OOAL Photo Print Tee” in easy-to-wear colors – Off White, Black, Heather Gray, and Navy – designed to highlight the photography. Completing the collection is a matching “OOAL Photo Print Tote,” a practical everyday bag that also promotes an important environmental message.

This project goes beyond just putting pictures on clothes; it supports Mēdeia1.0’s goal of using fashion to share information. They explain it like this: “It’s similar to a newspaper—it needs to be seen to start a conversation.”

If you’re interested in unique, meaningful clothing, the nanamica and Mēdeia1.0 collection inspired by Shomei Tomatsu is launching soon! It will be available starting Friday, May 22, 2026, at the nanamica store in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood and online at the official nanamica website.
