Nana Visitor was worried when Michael Dorn joined Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

As a dedicated Star Trek fan who has followed the series since its inception, I must say that the journey of Nana Visitor’s character, Major Kira, is one that resonates deeply with me. Her portrayal of a strong, complex woman carrying a burden of guilt and anger was a refreshing departure from the more approachable female characters we had seen before.

After Denise Crosby departed from Star Trek: The Next Generation during its first season, Michael Dorn’s character, Worf, took over as the Chief of Security on the Enterprise. This transition made sense because Worf had been working under Lt. Tasha Yar, who was played by Denise Crosby. Throughout the series and subsequent films, Worf continued to serve in this role.

1995 saw Michael Dorn join Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in its fourth season, a development that wasn’t shared with the cast prior to the event. Intriguingly, Nana Visitor, who portrayed Major Kira on the series, discovered about Dorn’s character during a fan convention. This revelation made her apprehensive because she had been told by Colm Coyle, “Whenever I am there, Worf is always watching me from behind.

In an interview with Trekmovie, Visitor admitted her concern that her character, Major Kira, might be at risk due to fan disapproval. She explained, “I thought I could be in trouble, given that the audience had some issues with me, and I was indeed concerned.

If the producers had communicated that Dorn was joining the cast, it might have alleviated her concerns and made her feel more like a team player. Knowing this information could have inspired her to contribute to the show in any way she could, fostering a sense of inclusivity. Additionally, it would have saved part of her mental energy from being consumed by uncertainty, allowing her to focus more on her job.

At first, viewers found Major Kira difficult to accept due to her perceived harshness and unlikability. Before Major Kira joined Deep Space Nine, other female characters in Star Trek were generally more approachable. However, the creators intentionally made Visitor’s character a woman grappling with immense guilt and anger, which explained why Major Kira seemed so tense.

Through multiple seasons, the character resonated with audiences and served as an inspiration for younger viewers. She distinguished herself as a figure who unwaveringly advocated for her beliefs, defended her passions, and refused to shy away from peril, regardless of personal risk.
