Naked Gun director slams “painful” reboot with Liam Neeson

The initial director of the The Naked Gun series has criticized the upcoming remake starring Liam Neeson, calling it a “tormenting” experience.

David Zucker directed both “The Naked Gun: From the Police Squad!” and “The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear,” and wrote and produced “The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.” All these films featured the late Leslie Nielsen in the lead roles.

The upcoming movie, whose trailer was just unveiled prior to its August debut, is the brainchild of director Akiva Schaffer, famous for his work on “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Zucker stated, “It hurts, but I wouldn’t have chosen that path.

To be honest, I’m inclined to criticize their actions, but that’s not my intention. Instead, what they’re doing goes against our approach, and it leaves me puzzled.

He mentioned that the Naked Gun series and Airplane, even though another installment was made without him, are like his “offspring” or “creations.

As seen in the trailer, the new The Naked Gun is serving as a continuation and a reboot.

In the new version, Liam Neeson portrays Frank Drebin Jr, and there’s a quick glimpse of his father. Similarly, Paul Walter Hauser is cast as Captain Ed Hocken Jr, the offspring of George Kennedy’s character from the earlier movies.

Additionally, Seth MacFarlane, best known for his role in “Family Guy,” along with Erica Huggins, also contribute to the production of this project.

In the course of the interview, Zucker casually mentioned that he, along with co-writer Pat Proft, had crafted their unique rendition of Naked Gun 4. He described it as something that was not your typical cop movie and hinted at a new, innovative direction.

The film being referred to is a spin-off of “The Naked Gun,” but it’s a comedic take on “Mission Impossible,” “The Bourne Identity,” and Bond movies, featuring the son of Drebin who’s a younger character. It was intended to be played by Andy Samberg in our version. We aimed for a youthful cast with a modern twist. However, it’s important to note that we aren’t trying to replace Leslie Nielsen; instead, we have another older actor, no matter how talented they might be.

The Naked Gun is scheduled to be released on August 1.
