Naga Munchetty’s 32-Year Battle with Painful Adenomyosis and Life-Altering Decisions
Naga Munchetty has shared her lifelong struggle with adenomyosis, a condition that left her enduring intense pain for years without finding a solution.
For over three decades, the BBC presenter, aged 50, endured recurring agonizing bouts of heavy bleeding, vomiting, fainting, and intense pain roughly every two and a half weeks. It wasn’t until 2022 that a private physician provided her with a long-awaited diagnosis.
Adenomyosis refers to a medical situation where the inner tissue of the uterus (womb) begins to extend within its muscular layer. Approximately one out of every ten women may experience this condition, according to the NHS.
In my own words, I express: “I find it infuriating when one starts doubting their own strength as a woman due to societal norms that subtly suggest women are inherently weaker. This self-doubt can seep into other aspects of life, making you question yourself more.
She stated that although she’s never considered suicide, the lack of answers made her feel so overwhelmed that she couldn’t endure another two and a half weeks. She simply needed it all to cease.
In 2019, prior to receiving a diagnosis, Naga decided to undergo sterilization as she considered it the best available solution to alleviate her symptoms.
Permanent birth control, often referred to as female sterilization, involves a surgical procedure through small incisions (keyhole surgery), during which the fallopian tubes are either sealed off or severed to prevent sperm from reaching an egg.
Regarding Naga, she mentioned that the decision was not difficult for her since she and her spouse, James Haggar (age 52), were absolutely clear about their preference to not have kids.
She mentioned that she had no desire for children, and avoiding hormonal treatments or the routine of birth control pills, as they conflicted with her lifestyle, seemed to be her sole choice.
Naga completely ruled out a hysterectomy because she didn’t believe it would eradicate her pain.
Currently, Naga is using a hormonal birth control pill to suppress menstruation and undergoes Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) as part of managing perimenopause.
Naga said she still lives with adenomyosis to this day.
After undergoing two ultrasounds and an MRI scan, Naga reports that a resolution has yet to be found, but expresses continued optimism as additional financial support becomes accessible for investigating women’s healthcare issues.
2023 saw her sharing about her experience with a severe adenomyosis relapse. It became so intense that her spouse had to summon an ambulance on her behalf.
On BBC Radio 5 Live, the speaker described an intense pain that left him immobilized, unable to change positions or even sit up straight. He continued to yell incessantly for a prolonged period of approximately 45 minutes.
In the dead of night, once more, fate struck, leaving me immobile and causing such distress that a call for help to the ambulance became necessary. All I could do was let out desperate cries for aid.
* I recall telling them only that ‘if an ambulance arrives’, but none came.
* ‘Perform a full hysterectomy on me,’ I said, because it seems to be the only treatment for removing this issue.
It felt as though an internal explosion was ongoing, concentrated primarily in my pelvic region, spreading down to my thighs and lower back. The intensity was so great that I found it difficult to change positions.
In conversation with The Independent, she also recounted an incident when she came very close to fainting during BBC Breakfast, all due to intense pain.
She remembered saying, “I need to go,” followed by her leaving, feeling faint in the bathroom, vomiting, and then returning.
The broadcaster has endured a lengthy period without responses or treatment from medical professionals, and she continues to experience discomfort while still performing her duties.
Currently, she mentioned on the radio that she is experiencing persistent discomfort or annoyance, which she described as ongoing pain.
‘In my uterus. Around my pelvis. Sometimes it runs down my thighs.
For the duration of the performance, I’ll experience a certain degree of discomfort, and it’s expected to last through the remainder of the day until I retire for the night.
