Nadia Suliaman: From £6K Caravan to Boardroom Battles
Nadia Suliaman, famously known from The Apprentice, has shared that her no-nonsense personality stemmed from navigating a challenging childhood, such as living on a council estate in Swansea.
The businesswoman, aged 36, disclosed that upon her initial arrival in London, she found herself inhabiting a dilapidated bungalow overrun by rats, which was shared among thirty others. For a span of a year, she resided in a caravan she procured from Gumtree.
In an interview with The Sun, Nadia shared that she decided to live in a caravan she bought for £6,000 as part of her plan to accumulate the £30,000 necessary to open her first hair and beauty salon.
In me, passion runs deep for this dynamic businesswoman whose bold maneuvers in the boardroom have left quite an impression. Yet, there’s more to her story than just those high-stakes deals – she bravely unveiled a harrowing tale of racism she endured during her upbringing in Wales.
As a child of mixed heritage, with a Welsh-Irish mom and an Iraqi dad, I’ve experienced being labeled with hurtful racial slurs.
She mentioned that the experience aided her in developing a certain level of tenacity, demonstrating her capacity to handle whatever life throws at her.

Nadia revealed that upon relocating to Middlesex from Wales, she found herself living in a five-bedroom bungalow shared by 29 other people as her initial residence there.
She mentioned that she found herself lying on a bed located in the kitchen, which was infested with mice and rats. However, she showed little concern about this situation. Instead, she seemed resigned, expressing something like, “I suppose that’s what I have to do, don’t I?” She barely had any time to arrange a move to another place.
Nadia revealed that following her acquisition of the job as an account manager for Coca Cola, she relocated to London. Later on, she encountered Tyson Aulsebrook, whom she is now engaged to, and they made a joint decision to establish a hair and beauty salon in Knightsbridge in 2020.
Nadia mentioned that they started the salon by combining their savings and obtaining an investment from her mom. Moreover, she disclosed that they chose to lease their apartment in Chiswick, West London, and relocated into a campervan they purchased from someone in Brighton.
I expressed: “It was a temporary compromise that yielded a significant long-term benefit. For a full year, we made do with less to accumulate an extra £30,000 for the salon. It felt prudent and resourceful, yet I had to undergo substantial adjustments in my lifestyle.
Due to needing more room, I discarded a large portion of my possessions, including clothing, and stored them at my mother’s place. As we barely had enough space to prepare meals, our diet mostly consisted of beans on toast.
Nadia shared that she and Tyson faced significant financial difficulties as they worked tirelessly to launch their business amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a dedicated follower, I was subsequently engaged by a senior figure at Hackett London to develop a male grooming section within their retail space, an opportunity that has since blossomed into the establishment of five stores in the heart of our city. These ventures have collectively generated an annual revenue of approximately £800,000.
During the recent episode of The Apprentice, Nadia generated quite a buzz on social media by attempting to negotiate the cost of a £20 fleece all the way down to £1.50.
In the town of Stratford-upon-Avon and its neighboring Warwickshire countryside, the two groups were given the mission to find and buy nine items at the most affordable prices available.
Lord Alan Sugar stated that the individuals who purchased the right quantity of goods at the lowest cost would be declared the victors.
The groups needed to locate items such as an antique pocket watch, a full-sized fleece, rhubarb stalks, a character named Ophelia, curved shoes, a coal scoop, a boat oar, a cluster of sweet treats (avalanche), and a Peacock feather quill.
The unusual highlight of the episode occurred when the task of purchasing a fleece led to an interesting negotiation attempt by Nadia Suliaman, as she tried to lower the cost of the item.
Nadia promptly proposed a significantly lower price of just £1.50 after learning that the item is usually priced at around £20.
The proposal left numerous spectators speechless, with one commenting that the vendor ought to feel offended, and another remarking that the participants seemed to be browsing in a ‘rustic discount store.’
In my personal experience, when I made an offer on a property, I didn’t anticipate the seller would agree so readily to such a lower price. I had hoped for a compromise where we could both find common ground and reach a mutually beneficial deal.
In the grand finale, I was honored to be part of the triumphant squad that clinched victory in our latest challenge. As for the competition, it was Carlo Brancati who found himself stepping out of the limelight, becoming the third contender to bid adieu to the show.
The Apprentice continues on Thursday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
