As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Nadia Lee Cohen and Martin Parr are joining forces for an iconically British project! Their latest photobook, released by IDEA, seamlessly blends Parr’s photojournalistic prowess with Cohen’s enchanting storytelling, delivering a gritty glimpse into the heart of small-town Essex.
The book titled Julie Bullard is named after Cohen’s childhood babysitter with the same name, who she credits as her “first taste of glamour.” This work offers a unique perspective into the photographer, reminiscent of her most renowned collection, Hello My Name Is. In this piece, much like in her famous body of work, Cohen transforms herself into 33 distinct characters, using prosthetics and makeup. However, here she assumes the character of the semi-fictional Julie in a sequence of situations: from comforting a crying baby while dressed as a waitress to striking poses, head held high, and wedding-ready in full 90s style glamour.
By using Parr’s distinctive style of photography, the photojournalist delves deeper into his study of British identity, venturing now into fictional settings. The extensive collection, comprising over 100 pieces, is presented in a book that mimics a 70s family photo album, complete with imitation leather covers and an antique gold metal spine.
On May 15th, Julie Bullard’s new release is scheduled, perfectly timed for Photo London. You can acquire it through IDEA and Dover Street Market.
