Nadeshot defends Roobet deal, clarifies 100T role in layoffs controversy

Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag has spoken up to clarify that the timing of announcing his new casino sponsor Roobet on the same day as 100 Thieves layoffs was merely coincidental, as he claims he wasn’t aware the announcements would overlap.

On September 5, while in Mexico, Nadeshot shared a video announcing his new sponsorship with online casino and sports-betting platform Roobet on social media. However, this announcement was met with a less enthusiastic response due to its ties to gambling and the perceived insensitivity of its timing.

Roobet is a crypto-focused online gambling platform, established in 2014 and backed by figures like rapper Snoop Dogg. Starting from 2022, they’ve partnered with the esports organization Astralis in a multi-year sponsorship agreement.

Nadeshot unaware of 100T layoffs

As a gamer and co-founder of 100 Thieves, I wanted to set the record straight about my current role within the organization. For close to two years now, I’ve stepped down as the CEO, and I no longer manage the day-to-day operations of our esports and lifestyle brand. My interactions with the executive team are pretty minimal these days, with only a handful of board meetings sprinkled throughout the year.

Nadeshot learned about the impending layoffs on September 5, which was a day after he had traveled to Mexico and the same day that the affected employees were informed. The 33-year-old noted that there had been discussions about the possibility of layoffs during his last board meeting in July, but no final decision had been made at that time.

During my tenure with 100 Thieves, there have been rounds of layoffs I was responsible for. This is not something I enjoy or take pride in. In fact, it’s one of the most challenging and unpleasant experiences I’ve had during my professional journey.

As a gamer speaking, I’d put it like this: “Hey there, after the recent layoffs, I really hope those who were affected manage to find a secure footing and bounce back strong.

In his video, Nadeshot expressed surprise, stating, ‘That would be quite a bold decision for me to say something like ‘hey, despite the layoffs happening here, let’s go live with Roobet’, but honestly, I wasn’t aware of that.’

Roobet stream timing due to family trip

Nadeshot shared that it was his wife, who’s 37 weeks along with her pregnancy, who organized his streaming adventure in Mexico as the first Roobet live broadcast.

According to Nadeshot, she has arranged our travel to Mexico for the Roobet live streams during September, October, November, December, and January. It is she who takes care of the planning within our group.

For several weeks, I had planned to stream on Roobet. Unfortunately, an unexpected event occurred – layoffs at 100 Thieves, which also affected Roobet.

Nadeshot on the morality of gambling on stream

In the conclusion of his video, Nadeshot addressed concerns that his partnership with gambling platform Roobet might have a negative impact on his younger, more vulnerable viewers.

He clarified that contrary to popular belief, his audience isn’t as young as many think. To support this claim, Nadeshot provided statistics regarding the demographics of his YouTube viewers.

  • 19% – 35 to 44 years old
  • 5% – 45 to 54 years old

Nadeshot added that 13-17 year-olds represented just 0.2% of his audience.

In a casual tone, Nadeshot pointed out, “Y’all seem to think I create videos for Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite just like others do. But let me clarify that this type of advertising for gambling is prevalent not only in the gaming world but across all significant forms of entertainment and media.” He further explained that personalities such as Drake, xQc, and Trainwrecks also partake in similar content.

“I feel like I just spawned in and I’m the first one to ever do a gambling deal.”

Nadeshot concluded by mentioning that someone offered him a massive sum of money to continue an activity he occasionally enjoys with Roobet. He clarified that this situation happened unintentionally coincides with his dismissal from 100 Thieves.
