Naboo’s Shocking Fate After the Prequels: What You Didn’t Know!
Beware! This content includes SPOILERS for Andor season 2 as well as Legacy of Vader. Although Naboo is most famously associated with the Star Wars prequels, it has a rich history under Imperial rule and beyond. Details about its past have been gradually unveiled through books and even recent comic stories. More recently, Naboo was featured in the second season of Andor.
Introduced in “The Phantom Menace” from 1999, the world of Naboo played a significant role in a continuous galactic struggle against the Trade Federation, who were secretly allied with Darth Sidious, also known as Palpatine. This verdant and flourishing planet was characterized by expansive green plains, swamps, lakes, waterfalls, submerged cities, and stunning architecture that catered to both human inhabitants and the native Gungans. Contrary to popular belief, Padmé Amidala’s funeral scene in “Revenge of the Sith” was not Naboo’s final appearance within the Star Wars universe. This has been demonstrated through Andor season 2 and various other pieces of Star Wars media.
After The Clone Wars, Naboo Thrived Under The Empire
As Seen in Andor Season 2, Episode 10
Under the rule of Emperor Palpatine, who hailed from Naboo, the planet flourished following the Empire’s rise to power post-Clone Wars. Captain Panaka, seen in ‘The Phantom Menace’, transitioned into an Imperial Moff, overseeing this prosperity that other planets lacked. However, even peaceful Naboo wasn’t completely immune to strife during the Dark Times. This is evident from Naboo’s portrayal in season 2 of ‘Andor’, where a flashback depicts insurgents Luthen Rael and Kleya detonating a bridge laden with Imperial soldiers, causing chaos on the planet.
It seems worth mentioning that Luthen’s known stay on Naboo might be why his later collection includes numerous artifacts from that world, including royal headwear and a Gungan skull linked to the Knight of the Old Republic. On a related note, novels like Star Wars: Leia, Princess of Alderaan suggest that Saw Gerrera and his group also traveled to Naboo at some point, carrying out an attack that resulted in Panaka’s demise. Given this, it appears that Naboo being Palpatine’s homeworld may have made it a significant symbolic objective for certain rebels.
Darth Vader Visited Naboo After The Empire Strikes Back
Visiting Padmé’s Tomb
After the events of “The Empire Strikes Back” and Luke Skywalker’s decision not to join him, Darth Vader sets out on a mission to explore his past, as depicted in the 2020 comic series about the Dark Lord. This journey eventually leads Vader back to Naboo, where he reconnects with Sabé, one of his late wife’s trusted handmaidens and decoys. Guided by Sabé, Darth Vader was led to Padmé’s tomb. However, this was a trap set by Sabé and the Amidalans, a group consisting of Padmé’s handmaids and those most loyal to her, who sought justice in their conviction that Vader was responsible for the deaths of both their former queen and Anakin Skywalker.
Although Vader effortlessly overcame all opponents, as late as the 2025 Legacy of Vader comic series, it’s been confirmed that this victory sparked widespread superstitions and tales. These stories went so far as suggesting that invoking Padmé Amidala’s name could summon the “dark spirit of death” back to their world. This belief lingered even during the sequel era. Consequently, Darth Vader unwittingly guaranteed that Padmé Amidala’s legacy would be nearly erased in the years and decades after her passing.
Near The End Of The Galactic Civil War, Naboo Was A Victim of Operation Cinder
Palpatine’s Contingency
After the Battle of Endor and the apparent death of Palpatine, Naboo decided to become part of the growing New Republic. Unfortunately, this peaceful world soon found itself in the crosshairs due to Operation Cinder – a backup plan initiated by Emperor Palpatine upon his death. This operation involved a coordinated bombardment, known as the Shattered Empire, which targeted numerous planets almost simultaneously, following the transmission of Palpatine’s final orders through messenger droids.
On the priority list for Operation Cinder, Naboo stood at the forefront. The Imperial forces made an effort to seize the planet, and in response, enormous satellites were set into motion, altering the weather conditions and disrupting the atmosphere. Nevertheless, Leia Organa and the Rebel fleet managed to fend off this initial attack on Naboo, and also repelled subsequent assaults from sympathizers of the Empire who aimed to use the planet as a rallying point because of its historical ties to the former Emperor.
Kylo Ren Becomes Naboo’s New King
Before Naboo’s Rebellion Against The First Order
A significant update to the Star Wars universe lore, Marvel’s latest canon-approved Legacy of Vader series reveals that by the time of the sequel trilogy, Naboo had deteriorated into disorder and decay. As factions emerged after the fall of the Empire, mistrust escalated to unmanageable levels. Due to its past prosperity under Palpatine’s rule, Naboo earned a negative image in the galaxy. Additionally, the planet was left in shambles following the rise of the First Order and the destruction of the New Republic, as depicted in The Force Awakens.
If the events depicted in Charles Soule and Stefano Raffaele’s “Legacy of Vader #4” are any clue, things could potentially worsen significantly for Naboo following Supreme Leader Kylo Ren’s visit, as seen in the 2025 issue. Accompanying him is Vaneé, a former servant of Darth Vader, who has been imparting information about Kylo’s grandfather and the origins of his power.
Exploring the remnants of Queen Amidala’s hideaway in Naboo’s lake district, Kylo Ren discovers details about the emotional bonds Darth Vader forged with Padmé and the slow decay of Naboo. He concludes that the inhabitants were stuck in their past and unwilling to progress. Consequently, before “The Rise of Skywalker,” Kylo Ren proclaims himself as the new King of Naboo, threatening that if they do not obey and acknowledge his rule, he will destroy the planet with the entire power of the First Order’s fleet at his disposal.
It’s intriguing to see how Kylo Ren’s story on Naboo unfolds, considering that Naboo was among those planets who defied the First Order during the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.” They openly resisted the rule of the First Order after the Battle of Exegol, which marked Palpatine’s ultimate demise and the destruction of his Final Order. This could mean that Naboo might undergo positive changes in the post-sequel era, but whether we’ll ever get to witness this future remains uncertain.
