I was so thrilled to see Quinta Brunson win Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series at the NAACP Image Awards! As a huge fan of Abbott Elementary, I was absolutely delighted – it was one of the first big wins of the night, and so well-deserved!
Brunson acknowledged the recent disruption at the BAFTA Awards while accepting her award, hinting at the incident involving activist John Davidson, who has Tourette’s syndrome. Davidson unintentionally shouted a racial slur while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting.
Despite prior warnings that Davidson’s neurological condition could cause him to say unpredictable things – and that these statements don’t represent his actual views – many people criticized a harsh word he used on the show. The BBC didn’t censor this language, even though they did censor a statement supporting Palestine during the same broadcast.
Brunson shared that seeing Black family members face hardship has been difficult, and she felt joyful to be in a space where Black identity was celebrated, speaking at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
Hosted by Deon Cole, the event honors outstanding achievements by Black artists and creators in film, TV, music, and books.
Angela Bassett continued her award-winning streak later in the night, taking home the prize for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in 9-1-1.
Miles Caton, the star of ‘Sinners,’ won the first award of the night for his outstanding performance in a motion picture.
In his inspiring acceptance speech, he encouraged those starting out to persevere. He said success could come with just one post or one video, emphasizing that their breakthrough might be closer than they realize. His advice was to remain prepared, stay focused, and prioritize faith.
Ryan Coogler’s horror movie, Sinners, received the most nominations of any film, with a total of 18. These included nominations for Michael B. Jordan as Outstanding Actor and for the film itself as Outstanding Motion Picture.
Cole began the event by strongly criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Most of what he said was cut from the live broadcast on CBS and BET.
He also included a jab at new Trump defender Nicki Minaj.
We’re praying for Nicki Minaj, Lord. She’s been having a difficult time and hasn’t been feeling like herself lately.
‘I believe whatever’s in her a** is affecting her brain, Lord,’ he joked.
Cole also made a shocking joke alluding to the N-word controversy at this year’s BAFTA Awards.
Cole jokingly warned any white men in the audience who might have Tourette’s syndrome to be mindful of the evening’s atmosphere, suggesting they might want to prepare themselves for a potentially unexpected response. He also playfully advised them to take extra medication, if applicable, eliciting laughter and applause.
Director Ryan Coogler, known for his work on ‘Sinners,’ was honored with awards for both Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing at Thursday’s Creative Honors ceremony.
Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku received awards for their supporting roles in ‘Sinners,’ and the film also won the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast.
The Peacock series Bel-Air received the most nominations – a total of seven – in the streaming and television categories.
The show, which premiered in 2022, earned three nominations: Jabari Banks for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, the show itself for Outstanding Drama Series, and Adrian Holmes for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
Teyana Taylor, known for her roles in “One Battle After Another,” received a total of six nominations spanning both acting and music.
Her album Escape Room received a nod for Outstanding Female Artist.
Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in Wicked: For Good, has received four award nominations, including one for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
Kendrick Lamar led with the most nods in the music categories including Outstanding Male Artist.
Erivo, Taylor, Lamar, Doechii and Jordan will battle it out for Entertainer of the Year.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! This year, we’re celebrating incredible talent with two special awards. Colman Domingo will receive the President’s Award, and the phenomenal Viola Davis will be honored with the Chairman’s Award. It’s going to be a truly special evening recognizing their contributions!
This year’s event features some new award categories, including Outstanding Literary Work in Journalism and Outstanding Editing for films, TV series, and specials.
Abbott Elementary, the popular ABC show, has already won awards for Best Comedy Series, as well as acting awards for William Stanford Davis and Janelle James as supporting actors.
Taraji P. Henson received an award for her performance as the lead actress in the Netflix limited series, Straw. The show itself also won an award as an outstanding limited television series.
Zootopia 2 won the award for Outstanding Animated Motion Picture, and Sinners received the award for Outstanding Cinematography.
Cedric The Entertainer won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on The Neighborhood.
Caleb McLaughlin received the award for best supporting actor in a drama series for his work on Stranger Things.
Aisha Hinds won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in 9-1-1.
The winners in several music categories were revealed before Saturday’s main event, including Male Artist, which went to Lamar for his album, Luther.
Oh my gosh, you guys, Cardi B finally got the recognition she deserves! She won for Outstanding Female Artist with ‘Am I The Drama?’ – I knew it would happen! And honestly, I’m SO excited for Monaleo! She totally killed it with ‘Who Did The Body?’ and winning New Artist is amazing. I’ve been streaming both of them non-stop, and I’m just so happy for both of my queens!
Don Lemon received awards in two categories at the podcasting awards: Outstanding Podcast – News and Information, and Society and Culture.
In a statement, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson explained that the NAACP Image Awards are a way of telling the Black community, “We See You.” The awards celebrate Black creativity, talent, and the importance of Black stories in all forms of media.
Whether through movies, TV, music, books, or other art forms, our nominees share stories that connect us to our history, celebrate who we are, and demonstrate the power of storytelling to shape the future.
