N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy is getting a gorgeous new deluxe box set in the Orbit Gold Edition

As a devoted reader and ardent fan of N.K. Jemisin’s extraordinary works, I can confidently say that the upcoming deluxe edition box set of “The Broken Earth” trilogy is nothing short of a literary treasure trove for fans like me. Having traversed the apocalyptic world of Essun and her fellow orogenes numerous times, I can attest to the unparalleled brilliance and emotional depth that Jemisin infuses into her stories.

Approximately a decade following the debut of author N.K. Jemisin’s trailblazing novel “The Fifth Season,” the epic “Broken Earth” trilogy is being released in an impressive new deluxe box set edition. Although Jemisin has penned numerous books throughout her career, she may still be most recognized for the “Broken Earth” trilogy. This captivating series centers around a woman named Essun who embarks on a quest to find her daughter in a world plagued by recurring environmental disasters, referred to as the “Fifth Season.” Essun is an orogene, a unique individual with the power to control and manipulate earth, stone, and geothermal energy. Due to this ability, orogenes have historically been subjected to brutal oppression by those who fear their strength.

The first installment of the trilogy, titled “The Fifth Season,” was published in 2015, with subsequent books, “The Obelisk Gate” (2016) and “The Stone Sky” (2017), following suit. Not only are these books critically acclaimed and beloved by many readers, but the “Broken Earth” series is particularly distinguished because N.K. Jemisin won the Hugo Award for Best Novel an unprecedented three consecutive times, one for each book in the trilogy. To this day, she remains the sole author to have achieved this feat.

On the 19th of November, you can acquire a particularly captivating collector’s version of “The Broken Earth” Gold Edition, as depicted above. This enchanting set is being launched by Orbit, with Lauren Panepinto overseeing the art direction and design, and an exclusive box artwork by Justin Cherry.

What comes in The Broken Earth Gold Edition set?

These books are leather-bound hardcovers, boasting freshly embossed cover art. Each one features gold-edged pages, colorful interior artwork, and a built-in bookmark. As an added bonus, this set includes a few special extras, headlined by an exclusive extra scene from “The Fifth Season.” Whether you’re revisiting Jemisin’s science fantasy series or embarking on it for the first time, this collection offers everything you need.

The boxed collection typically sells for $180, making it quite expensive, so it’s more suitable for collectors. However, Hachette, Orbit’s parent publisher, is currently offering a 20% discount on the series when you preorder the Gold Edition from their website, bringing the price down to $144, or around $50 per book. Additionally, if you choose to preorder, you will receive a signed copy of “The Fifth Season” in the set as well.

I strongly support the idea of readers determining their own spending on books across various editions, and it’s clear that “The Broken Earth” series merits such a special edition. If you’re a fan of N.K. Jemisin’s work, this is definitely worth checking out.

The Gold Edition of “The Broken Earth” series will be available starting November 19th. If you’d like to secure your copy ahead of time, consider placing an order directly with Hachette.
