Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, a mystery thriller described as delightfully absurd, is currently gaining popularity in the UK. The six-episode series, created and written by Anthony Horowitz, centers around nine people who are unexpectedly stranded in the Mexican jungle after their plane goes down.
With survivors succumbing to death one after another, the remaining individuals have to uncover the truth behind the killings and identify the person responsible.
The story centers around: ten passports, nine corpses, and a puzzling enigma. While they might have lived through a plane crash, the real question is – can they endure the dangers of the jungle?

The show is directed by Brian O’Malley and Viviane Andereggen, and features a cast including Eric McCormack – known from Will & Grace – as well as David Ajala, Lydia Wilson, Jan Le, Adam Long, Siobhán McSweeney, Peter Gadiot, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Carolina Guerra, Deborah Ayorinde and Hari Dhillon.
The show initially launched on MGM+ in the US back in March. It then premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on September 27th and is currently gaining popularity, ranking at #8 on the streaming service’s ‘Most Popular Today’ list. It’s now trending on BBC iPlayer.
Since it launched, the six-episode series has been generally well-received. Currently, it has an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 5 critic reviews.
The Guardian‘s Lucy Mangan enthusiastically reviewed the show, awarding it five stars and stating: “I don’t know that anything has given me greater or purer joy this year.”
Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is pure, joyful silliness – it doesn’t try to be clever or hide its absurdity, even though the world is full of both. I absolutely love its wild, unpredictable plot that feels like a mix of Agatha Christie and Lost,” they added.
The Globe and Mail reported that bestselling mystery writer Anthony Horowitz created the show. They noted that although his writing sometimes lacks vibrancy, his skill in building suspense is strong, adding, “I’m hooked after two episodes.”
The mystery surrounding the murder is well done and promises surprising twists. However, in Nine Bodies, it’s the distrust and unspoken tensions among the plane crash survivors that really captivate us as they struggle in the jungle, according to Decider.
Even if the idea isn’t original, a strong starting point can make a big difference,” wrote Common Sense Media. However, The Wall Street Journal wasn’t as impressed, giving it a ‘rotten’ review on their website.
Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.
