My unpleasant encounter with Kristina Rihanoff and Ben Cohen during Strictly scandal exposed their arrogance – and I can’t feel sorry for them now they’ve fallen

As a seasoned journalist who’s been in the thick of it for years, I can honestly say that night at the Sanctum Hotel was one for the books – or rather, one for my personal anecdote collection. The encounter with Kristina and Ben was certainly unforgettable, to put it mildly. It’s not every day you find yourself in a corner being shouted at by a celebrity, especially when you’re just doing your job.

Wearing an impressive ballgown, Kristina Rihanoff was breathtakingly beautiful while hosting a lavish event at a hotel in Mayfair, accompanied by her dance partner from Strictly Come Dancing, Ben Cohen.

She enjoyed the situation immensely while serving expensive cocktails to her friends and PR associates. Earlier in the night, they had all contributed to a gala event benefiting her children’s charity, The Dot Com Foundation, which was held at the distinguished Mansion House in the City of London.

The setting was the very same rooftop suite at the Sanctum Hotel, coincidentally the place where I crossed paths with Meghan Markle only a year prior. This cozy location came with a price tag that added up substantially.

In the year 2014, Kristina, who used to appear on Strictly, had reserved a room at a hotel that would cost approximately £1,000 per night.

Interestingly, even though Ben was married to Abby at the time, he was by her side. Both of them maintained publicly that they weren’t in a relationship, but here’s an intriguing twist: The next day, Ben would announce their separation, making Abby, his two daughters’ mother, his ex-wife. They seemed quite content, possibly because they knew this revelation was coming.

Approximately a decade has passed since Kristina’s special evening occurred, and that night remains etched in my memory due to an intriguing meeting with Ben, which I will soon detail.

On a Friday, it was disclosed at Northampton Crown Court that Kristina and her former rugby player partner are battling against the threat of losing all their assets due to overwhelming debt. In court, she shared their efforts to salvage their relationship while dealing with financial hardships.

Kristina made an attempt (but failed) to contest a driving ban that was issued to her following an instance in April where she drove her £30,000 Audi Q3 without insurance. As a result of this offense, she received six points on her driver’s license in June and was fined and ordered to pay approximately £900 in penalties and court costs.

The remarkable tale of Kristina’s battles with romance and finances unfolded during a heated dispute, as the couple passionately pleaded for her to retain her driver’s license, which was at risk due to accumulating six penalty points.

In this scenario, Ben served as a testifying party for the 46-year-old Russian-born dancer turned yoga instructor. He shared with the court that the pair had established multiple ventures, such as a yoga studio, which experienced a decrease in clientele due to the pandemic.

Speaking with strong emotion, the former England soccer player, now 45, declared: ‘Each morning, I strive to hold on to everything I have – my vehicles, my home, and my relationship.’

When asked about the tension in their relationship, Ben clarified: “We’ve been sharing a home. We’ve got a joint financial commitment. Our businesses overlap, and the difficulty lies in the fact that we started our venture prior to the pandemic, which hit us particularly hard.

It appears that their brush with fame and wealth from past times led to them developing an air of superiority. This was quite noticeable during our unexpected meeting at the Sanctum Hotel on that particular evening, with Ben and Kristina.

I was staying there for a couple of nights before I moved to Los Angeles for work.

Coincidentally, I’d penned a tale about Kristina and Ben not long ago, following their appearance together on a London subway train in June 2014 – half a year after their stint on Strictly Come Dancing concluded.

For several weeks, whispers about their romantic involvement had intensified, yet they consistently denied being in a relationship, directing their press agents to refute any such speculations in the media.

On the contrary, photos painted a distinct narrative. These images captured them appearing affectionate on the London Underground at 9 pm, with Kristina having just left an event at the House of Commons. Witnesses noticed Ben casually placing his arm around the Russian ballerina as they conversed.

In the situation, there wasn’t much they could control regarding the photos. However, as I happened to be in the hotel bar with that couple that evening, it seemed to Ben that there was a possibility for him to intervene or take action concerning me.

As a consistent presence in the Mayfair nightlife, Mark confided in me that he was worried we might not be able to settle the bill for our extravagant event unless I intervened.

He proposed that we head to your room with a bottle of champagne, which was a suggestion I happily accepted. I didn’t want him to risk losing a large amount of money.

Afterward, my superior later expressed dissatisfaction with the BBC, leading them to summon Kristina for a stern reprimand regarding her conduct.
