My Oxford Year star defends “powerful” ending that has left fans in tears

Corey Mylchreest, the star of the hit Netflix series “My Oxford Year,” has spoken up in support of the movie’s emotionally poignant conclusion.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor clarified the reasons behind the differences between the TV show, adapted from Julia Whelan’s 2018 novel, and its original source material.

Instead of concluding with Jamie, battling terminal cancer, healthy enough to tour Europe with Anna, the movie instead chose a different path. It showed that Jamie had already passed away, with Anna present at his side. This sad event led Anna to embark on a solo European journey as a tribute to their shared love.

Fans of the film were deeply disappointed and expressed their feelings on social media. In response to the emotional finale, Mylchreest justified the movie’s ending by stating, “I think it works best this way,” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The book seems to be growing stronger in its themes. It wouldn’t sit right if Jamie expressed these ideas and Anna didn’t further embrace the philosophy he’s promoting.

Carson added his thoughts on the matter, mentioning that the surreal scene where Anna travels accompanied by Jamie in spirit resonated with both the actors and the production team. “Although it’s evident that Anna is alone at the finale, we intentionally kept some ambiguity to conclude the film on a hopeful and radiant note,” he explained.
