Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1-2
Since 1977, Star Wars has been great at introducing supporting characters, and sometimes those characters become fan favorites. That’s definitely happening with Maul in Maul – Shadow Lord, and with a new droid named Spybot in the latest Star Wars series. Even though the series is only two episodes in, Spybot, a seemingly unassuming espionage droid, is proving to be a surprisingly compelling addition.
Even in the first few scenes, Spybot proves to be much more than just a hacker and spy. He’s a wildly unpredictable and entertaining character as his boss tries to build a new criminal empire in the galaxy.
What’s really cool about Spybot is his connection to the Force Unleashed games – a fantastic Star Wars video game series. This creates a special moment, as Spybot involves Sam Witwer, the original voice actor for Darth Maul in those games.
No Question, Spybot Is Already One Of My Favorite Star Wars Droids
Right from the start of Shadow Lord, the little black, disc-shaped droid named Spybot zips around with a really energetic and fun vibe.
Spybot is a lot like Frenzy, the small, chaotic Decepticon hacker from the first Transformers movie. If you missed any jokes while watching the first two episodes, definitely turn on the subtitles – Spybot has some really funny lines, like his catchphrase, “booshkeedo!”
This droid is clearly enthusiastic about his work, and seems to enjoy causing a little trouble! He gets a kick out of outsmarting the authorities and hacking into enemy ships, all while cheerfully chatting and even scatting to himself. After just two episodes of Shadow Lord, Spybot has already shown how valuable he is to Maul’s team, and he seems remarkably devoted. He might be the closest thing Maul has to a companion.
Spybot’s Voice Actor Creates A 16-Year Force Unleashed Reunion With Darth Maul’s Sam Witwer
For dedicated Star Wars fans, the appeal of Spybot extends beyond just the character. It’s exciting that the new droid is voiced by David W. Collins of Skywalker Sound.
I’ve been a fan of Collins’ work for ages – he’s done so many of the cool background voices in Star Wars, especially in the video games! But I was really excited to realize he was the one doing the voice modulation for Luthen Rael’s droid on that ship, The Fondor, in both seasons of Andor. It’s awesome to see him get more prominent work!
As a big Star Wars fan, I always thought the combat training droid Proxy in The Force Unleashed games was a standout character, and it’s awesome to know James Arnold Taylor voices him! He’s tasked with both helping and trying to kill Starkiller, Darth Vader’s apprentice in the old Legends continuity. Speaking of voices, it’s pretty cool that Sam Witwer, who voiced Starkiller, has gone on to become the definitive Darth Maul since 2012 – what a legacy!
After more than 16 years, actors Phil Collins and Sam Witwer have teamed up again within the official Star Wars story, this time in Maul – Shadow Lord. Though their characters interact differently now, it’s enjoyable to hear them reprise their roles as a dark side user and their distinctive droid partner.
It’s a fantastic Easter egg and a great nod to the past, linking back to one of Witwer’s earliest roles in Star Wars. But honestly, I think Spybot would still be one of my favorite Star Wars droids even without that awesome connection to the original Force Unleashed games.
New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
