My Heat 2 Predictions For Which Characters Christian Bale & Leonardo DiCaprio Are Actually Playing

Both Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio will be in Heat 2, but their roles haven’t been revealed yet. I previously mentioned that casting this sequel would be incredibly difficult, because finding actors who can fill the shoes of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino is a huge challenge.

It’s no surprise that a new Michael Mann film draws top-tier actors. His upcoming movie, Heat 2, is based on the novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, and will explore events both before and after the original film. Though there’s a lot of speculation about who will star, Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio are the only actors confirmed so far.

I Predict Christian Bale & Leonardo DiCaprio Are Playing Hanna And Chris In Heat 2

The upcoming film, Heat 2, will have a big cast and span more than ten years. While it’s sure to be packed with famous actors, the most important roles to fill are those of Hanna, Neil, and Shiherlis – characters previously played by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. Many believe Shiherlis will be the central character in the new movie.

Heat 2 explores the beginnings of Neil and his team, and then shows how Shiherlis’s life changes after the events of the first movie. It’s a compelling role for an antihero, which is exactly the type of character Leonardo DiCaprio likes to play. Shiherlis is a complex character who undergoes the biggest transformation throughout the story, and he even has a love interest.

Although Austin Butler was considered, Leonardo DiCaprio now seems like a better choice for the role. In a 2025 interview with Variety, DiCaprio wasn’t certain whether he’d be playing Shiherlis or Hanna, possibly because he hadn’t decided yet, or he was keeping details secret. Personally, I think Christian Bale would be perfect as Hanna instead.

He’s played a police officer before in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, and he’s familiar with complex, flawed characters. While a follow-up film might struggle to match the excitement of a Pacino-De Niro pairing, a showdown between Bale and DiCaprio would certainly be impressive.

Having Bale take on the role would be fantastic, mainly because he wouldn’t simply copy Al Pacino’s performance. He’d offer a new and original interpretation, and even though Heat 2 is a sequel, the actors need to make the characters their own.

Adam Driver Is Almost Certain To Play Heat 2’s Young Neil

Adam Driver recently starred in Michael Mann’s film Ferrari, and since 2023, he’s been the frontrunner to play Neil McCauley in Heat 2. Although Neil McCauley only appears in the 1988 portion of the story, he’s a central figure throughout the entire novel.

The book reveals the reasons behind Neil’s emotional distance in the movie. Ryan Gosling was the ideal choice for the role, and reportedly turned down another romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers to ensure he was available for Heat 2. If my understanding is correct, the sequel will bring back Leonardo DiCaprio as Shiherlis, Christian Bale as Hanna, and Gosling as Neil.

I could definitely be mistaken, but it’s possible Leonardo DiCaprio will end up playing Hanna, and Christian Bale could be the main villain, Wardell, in Heat 2. Only time will tell, but if I had to guess, that’s what I’d predict.
