My Favorite Rollercoaster Just Got Named The World’s Best (Again), And I Can’t Tell You How Happy That Makes Me

As someone who adores theme parks, I can’t help but feel energized when encountering fellow enthusiasts, especially those who have experienced unique rides that catch my interest, such as “Good Gravy” at Holiday World or the nostalgic “Chaos” at the closed Opryland park. To put it simply, I’ve had my share of thrilling coaster rides throughout my life, but none can rival the exhilaration I felt on Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure VelociCoaster.

It turns out that I’m not alone in my feelings, as The VelociCoaster has been declared the best rollercoaster globally for the fourth consecutive year by Theme Park Insider during their annual awards. Interestingly, it surpassed another Universal Orlando coaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, in its inaugural win!

In June 2021, I visited the grand opening of VelociCoaster, marking my first trip to a theme park post-Covid. Given the long hiatus, my enthusiasm for the novelty of a fresh attraction might have influenced my initial assessment, making me believe it was as fantastic as they come.

Indeed, I’m thrilled to share that the VelociCoaster has proven its durability over time. In fact, after four years, I can confidently affirm that the initial exhilaration of riding it hasn’t waned one bit. Moreover, the experience becomes even more thrilling when I get to ride it under the cover of night, losing track of the twists and turns as they approach.

For four consecutive years holding onto an award is quite a stretch, and this could be connected to the prolonged closure of Cedar Park’s Top Thrill 2, which initially intended to debut last summer but shuttered just a week into operation. It was only on May 3rd that it reopened at the Ohio amusement park, making me eager to find out if it will feature in top roller coaster rankings for the upcoming year (having regained its title as the tallest coaster after Kingda Ka was dismantled).

Indeed, without a doubt, I wholeheartedly affirm that the Velociraptor-inspired ride is well-deserved. Even when Top Thrill 2 resumes operations, I’m not convinced it can match The VelociCoaster’s breathtaking mosasaurus loop – a feat achieved without shoulder restraints. It’s an exceptionally gratifying roller coaster experience, one that Theme Park Insider considers “The best coaster.” This isn’t just praise from the magazine; many are praising how exceptional the ride is. When it first opened, art director Gregory Hall told me it was “the best inversion” he had ever experienced. I believe this sentiment remains valid today.

Why This Year The Laud Is Especially Impressive

It’s worth mentioning that I’m still very impressed that the ride has maintained its reputation for another year, especially considering Universal Orlando is already showcasing their upcoming theme park Epic Universe. I suppose this will lead to some exciting rivalry. The Epic Universe will include new coasters and other attractions, with Stardust Racers likely being the main attraction in Celestial Park. This ride features two launch coasters racing against each other. Other rides with coaster elements include the spinning Curse of the Werewolf coaster, family-friendly Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, and the much-talked-about Donkey Kong: Mine-Cart Madness.

It’s logical that with Universal Orlando unveiling new rides in recent times, it might have thought about more competitors this year. However, it’s pleasing to see the Jurassic World-themed ride remaining intact, its Top Hat standing proudly tall, eager to deliver the thrilling roller coaster experience that fans have long anticipated.
