Must watch: ITV’s “excellent” returning medical thriller from team behind Line of Duty reveals new trailer

The popular ITV medical drama, “Malpractice,” is coming back for another season. A sneak peek of the upcoming episodes hints at the fear and deception that await us.

The initial series, produced by World Productions, who are also behind shows like “Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard”, centered around Dr. Lucinda Edwards (played by Niamh Algar). This character was thrust into a medical inquiry due to the unfortunate death of an opioid overdose patient, Edith Owusu, during her shift.

In the upcoming second season of the highly praised thriller, the narrative shifts to a fresh inquiry, centering around Dr. James Ford (Tom Hughes), a psychiatric registrar on call, who finds himself juggling between a routine postnatal examination and the potential commitment of another patient.

Doctors Norma Callahan (previously Helen Behan) and George Adjei (originally Jordan Kouamé), from the Medical Investigation Team, are summoned for an investigation. However, it appears that this case hides deeper mysteries.

Dr. Ford’s private life is disorganized, and some of his peers might perceive him as haughty; however, he remains dedicated to the care of his susceptible patients.

Delving deeper into the incidents of that evening, it seems like a chain of questionable decisions made by one physician is not confined to the psychiatric ward alone, but has extended to a hospital that appears to be in internal conflict.

As the MIU investigation draws near, will Dr. Ford manage to salvage his precarious career amidst a series of seemingly incriminating errors? Is Dr. Ford more a self-proclaimed deity in his profession or an unfortunate scapegoat of the institution? Can the MIU discern the facts, given the hostility from all quarters?

Completing the ensemble are Selin Hizli, Zoë Telford, Rick Warden, and Ace Bhatti. The upcoming second season of this show will be broadcast on ITV and ITVX in the coming month.

The first season of the series “Malpractice” was highly acclaimed, as evidenced by “The Telegraph‘s” labeling it as “outstanding,” and “The Times‘s” comment that it seems to have a fresh perspective.

Previously, the show has drawn comparisons with “Line of Duty.” Behan recently shared insights on the resemblances he sees between the two series.

As a devoted admirer, I’d express it like this: “There’s no denying that the challenge for World Productions lies in living up to the acclaim of ‘Line of Duty,’ their crown jewel of productions,” I shared with Radio Times and other media outlets.

However, I must clarify, it felt nothing like what you suggested. Instead, it had a truly distinctive quality when I encountered it. Frankly, I couldn’t find anything comparable. In essence, it was entirely unique in its own right.

Malpractice will return on ITV1 and ITVX in May 2025.
