Critically acclaimed documentary Blackfish is due to leave Netflix soon.
Under the guidance of director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, a 2013 movie delves into the story of Tilikum, an orca whale who gave performances but spent the majority of his life at SeaWorld Orlando. Notably, this performing whale was linked to the tragic deaths of three individuals over several decades while held in captivity.
This compelling documentary, often referred to as a “must-watch,” delves into his life to highlight issues in the marine park business, our connection with nature, and the limited understanding humans have about these exceptionally intelligent sea creatures.
Currently, you can stream ‘Blackfish’ on Netflix, but mark your calendars, because it’s set to depart from the streaming platform by the end of May – specifically on the 31st. So, if you’re a fan, don’t delay in catching it there!
After its debut, the movie received overwhelming praise from viewers and critics alike, largely due to its compelling portrayal of orca captivity. As a result, it garnered an impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating near-universal acclaim.
“Empire” referred to it as “informative, passionate, and powerfully condemning,” while “The Hollywood Reporter” stated: “This engaging movie builds a compelling argument against confining such animals for human amusement in captivity.
According to Variety, the movie gives off an impression of a wealthy organization that, despite its assertions of compassionate and competent care, allows activities that directly contradict the welfare of the animals.
In 2016, SeaWorld announced their plan to discontinue all orca performances and halt their breeding program, following confirmation of Tilikum’s approaching death.
In January 2017, it was announced that Tilikum had sadly died at the age of 36.
SeaWorld mourns the loss of their famous orca, Tilikum, as they shared in a previous communication.
This morning on January 6th, Tilikum unfortunately passed away, with his devoted trainers, caretakers, and veterinarians who had been providing him round-the-clock, top-notch care by his side.
Today might be tough for SeaWorld’s team, but let’s not forget that Tilikum, during his time at SeaWorld, experienced a full and rewarding life, and in doing so, captivated the hearts of countless individuals worldwide, fostering a deep love for these extraordinary marine creatures.
Blackfish will be available to stream on Netflix until 31 May.
