Taron Egerton has spoken about the “disturbing” true story behind his new Apple TV+ series Smoke.
In the latest nine-episode crime drama, the star known for roles in both “Tetris” and “Carry-On” films takes the helm. His character is a former firefighter turned investigator, working tirelessly to apprehend two notorious arsonists terrorizing the Pacific Northwest region.
The series draws its inspiration from the podcast “Firebug,” delving into the true account of John Leonard Orr, an infamous arsonist whose actions caused widespread fear in America during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Without prior knowledge of him or his story, Edgerton agreed to participate in the show, as he is known as the notorious serial arsonist who started over 2,000 fires spanning three decades across America.
He shared that he tuned into the podcast as soon as it debuted, and that’s when the concept was initially introduced, according to his interview with Radio Times.
I found many aspects of it incredibly challenging to comprehend, not only because it was distressing, but also because his actions were bizarre and varied in numerous unusual ways.
I found it quite difficult to combine them effectively so that the final result seemed like a unified character.
He pointed out that none of the characters on the show are easily confined to a specific mold, and his character, Dave Gudsen, is particularly intriguing.
This character is nothing like any role I’ve been given before, and honestly, it’s not like anything I’ve seen on television either,” Egerton explained further.
He displays complexity in various aspects of his character. He doesn’t suffer from multiple personalities, but rather, he seems to segregate different parts of himself in a peculiar manner. If you catch a glimpse of what transpires privately, it can be downright unsettling.
