Netflix’s new Korean thriller, Murder Report, is quickly gaining popularity with viewers, drawing comparisons to the chilling character of Hannibal Lecter.
From December 8th to 18th, the movie Murder Report was the ninth most popular non-English film on Netflix worldwide, with 1 million views and 1.7 million hours watched. It ranked below Troll 2, The Girlfriend, The Night My Dad Saved Christmas 2, Troll, Stephen, Kaantha, Sunny Sanskari ki Tulsi Kumari, and Operation Pope, but above Kampung Jabang Mayit: Ritual Maut.
Directed by Young-Jun Cho, known for films like The Preparation and Midnight Sun, Murder Report centers around a seasoned reporter trying to land a big story. He decides to interview a convicted serial killer responsible for eleven murders, which quickly spirals into a risky psychological battle between them.
The movie’s story is reminiscent of The Silence of the Lambs, where a new FBI trainee named Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, seeks the help of the imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to track down another serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine).
Okay, so I recently checked out Murder Report on Netflix, and it’s been getting some buzz, but it’s really weird – it doesn’t have any official critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes! There are just a couple of user ratings, not enough for a proper audience score. Those users who did rate it seemed to dig the film’s vibe and sound design, even saying it reminded them of a Korean version of a David Fincher movie. But, they also thought it tried too hard with the twists and turns, and the movie felt a little all over the place tonally.

The new series, Murder Report, adds to the growing success of Korean shows on Netflix. This popularity began with Squid Game and has continued with hits like The Glory, Crash Landing on You, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Kingdom, Queen of Tears, My Demon, Weak Hero Class 1, and Kill Boksoon.
